Mr. John Wesley Rayford of Valdosta, Georgia. Sunrise: Tuesday, July 6, 1948, ~ Sunset: Friday, October 31, 2025, Age: 77 years
It is with the utmost respect and reverence that the Harrington Funeral Home family announces the earthly transition of Mr. John Wesley Rayford, a beloved community figure, family man, and mentor to many. Mr. Rayford peacefully crossed from labor to reward on Friday, October 31, 2025, at the age of 77.
A lifelong resident of Valdosta, Georgia, Mr. Rayford dedicated his career to the growth and development of youth and families through his remarkable service with the Valdosta-Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority (VLPRA). As the longtime Director of both Pinevale Youth Center and Mildred Hunter Community Center, his leadership, compassion, and commitment touched generations.
Reflecting on his years of service, Mr. Rayford once shared, “When I reflect on the years, I worked at Pinevale, there were few bad days. I enjoyed every one of the children, and my staff made the job easy.”
His influence extended far beyond recreation. Many who came through Pinevale under his leadership—now adults—continue to speak fondly of the lessons, laughter, and love they experienced during what they affectionately call the “Pinevale Days.”
In recognition of his outstanding service and lifelong dedication to the Valdosta-Lowndes community, the Mayor and Council of the City of Valdosta, along with Lowndes County officials, issued a Proclamation declaring July 29th each year as “John Wesley Rayford Day.” This honor stands as a lasting tribute to his legacy of excellence and service.
As we honor the life of this distinguished gentleman and scholar, we are reminded of the words that reflect his enduring faith and strength:
“Time passes by as I cross the bridge… I am crossing over to the other side; I am finding out if I know my calling. The trials I face make my heart race, But I know that I must hold on, I know that I must hold on to the Right Hand of God. His arm is pointing the way, His voice is telling me where to stay; And when I need to run away, His love carries me.”
Final Care and Compassionate Services have been entrusted to the professional staff of Harrington Funeral Home, Inc. “Where the legacy of dignity and respect is honored in every service.”
With heartfelt sympathy we are praying for each of you for strength to stand and carry on. He will definitely be missed. His gentle spirit and smile will always be remembered. This is a tough one. But God!!🙏🏾💪🏾❤️
