Obituary For Mr. Roger Tyrone Rome

OFFICIAL NOTICE OF EARTHLY TRANSITION:

The Final Whistle Has Sounded.

It is with profound sorrow and heartfelt reverence, Harrington Funeral Home, Inc., announce the earthly transition of Mr. Roger Tyrone Rome of Valdosta, Georgia.

Mr. Rome was born October 25, 1953, and completed his final drive and went his final yards in life’s journey on June 5, 2026.

A gifted athlete, respected teammate, and proud son of Valdosta, Roger Rome left an enduring mark both on and off the field. His excellence in football earned him recognition as a member of the 1970 All-State First Team, and his remarkable contributions to the sport were forever honored with his induction into the Valdosta High School Hall of Fame in 2016.

Throughout his life, he demonstrated the qualities of a true champion, discipline, determination, sportsmanship, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of athletes and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Today, the stadium lights shine a little dimmer, the crowd grows silent, and a grateful community pauses to honor a hometown hero whose impact extended far beyond the scoreboard.

Though the game of life has reached its final quarter, we celebrate a life that was played with heart, courage, and purpose. The scoreboard of eternity now reflects a victorious transition from labor to reward.

We ask that you keep the Rome family in your prayers during this season of bereavement as they reflect upon and celebrate the life and legacy of a beloved father, family member, friend, teammate, and community icon.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

It is with great sadness to hear about Roger. I am so glad I got to visit with him at the Wildcat reunion back in April. We had a great talk and reminisced about the early days of our coaching careers. A great man and Wildcat who will surely be missed.

It is with great sadness that I offer my condolences to the family & friends of my friend Roger Rome. He was a solid voice of reason for the several years we shared as school neighbors at THS. Our Social Studies departmental meetings were never boring as Roger would often regale us with stories to fit each situation. Every opportunity was a learning opportunity and a chance to move the ball. You will be missed Coach. Godspeed.

Roger and I played basketball together at Dalton Junior College from 1971-73. His actions on and off the court were the perfect example of a teammate. He treated everyone with dignity and respect and the same was shown to him. He was a blessing in the life of anyone who knew him and he mirrored the attributes of what a man should be.
