My condolences to the Barrett family. I met Willie in Germany in the late 1980s while serving our nation in the U.S. Army. We immediately had a connection by both being from Florida, we were "homeboys" from day one. When we left Germany going our separate ways. I bumped into him again in the middle east during Operation Desert Storm. After the war we were both united again, stationed at Fort Riley Kansas in the early 1990s. Afterwards life took us our separate ways. We were able to keep in touch over the years and I'm glad I was able to speak to him again not too long ago. Willie was like a big brother to me, always supportive and encouraging but also quick to set me straight. Barrett was one of the best in game basketball players I have ever seen. During our tournaments in Germany, Willie often earned MVP and finished the season as the top scorer per game. I will always cherish the memories and good times we had as young men and young Soldiers. I am deeply sorrowed and pray that the family finds strength during this difficult time and finds comfort in this scripture; "But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive." – 1 Corinthians 15:20-22
