Funeral service for Josephine Thomas, 89, of Opelika, AL, will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 28, 2025, at St. Luke A.M.E. Church, 1308 Auburn Street, Opelika, AL, 36801 with interment in Evergreen Cemetery, 1409 Monroe Avenue, Opelika, AL, 36801, Reverend Monique Summers will officiate.
Mrs. Thomas, who passed away Friday, August 22, 2025 at her home in Opelika, Alabama, was born May 27, 1936, in Lee County, Alabama.
Public viewing will be Wednesday, August 27, 2025 from 2:00 p.m. β 6:00 p.m. Family will receive family and friends from 5:00 p.m. β 6:00 p.m.
Mrs. Thomas will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the service.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two children, Arnessa Thomas Leverett of Montgomery, AL and Ernest Lee Thomas Jr. (Sommer) of Nashville, TN; four grandchildren, Cherrell Thomas (Maurice) of Stone Mountain, GA, Michael Brandon Maddox of Montgomery, AL, Ernest Lee Thomas III of Ft. Walton Beach, FL and Dr. Braxtin Thomas of Nashville, TN; one great-granddaughter, Ahria Ogbuehi of Stone Mountain, GA; loving daughter-in-law, Bonita Reed Thomas of Atlanta, GA; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Miles of Atlanta, GA; one bonus great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Stovall of Montgomery, AL; devoted former son-in-law, Carnell Maddox of Opelika, AL; the loving JATβs (Thomas Family); the Nunn Family; her very caring longtime Spring Hill Neighbors, Dorothy Hughley, Williams Harper, Stanley Kellom and Charles Lyles all of Opelika, AL; dedicated friend, Elvis Allen of Dallas, TX; two special baby girls, Ava Russell and Deborah Mitchell both of Opelika, AL; longtime friends, Dorothy Flakes, Jeanette Burton and Pearlie Mae Carr all of Opelika, AL; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
