Obituary For Robert Lee “Sonny” Mitchell, Jr.

Funeral service for Robert Mitchell, 84, of Opelika, AL, will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 30, 2024, at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church, 650 Jeter Avenue, Opelika, AL, 36801 with interment in Garden Hills Cemetery, Reverend Clifford E. Jones will officiate.

Mr. Mitchell, who passed away Sunday, September 22, 2024 at the Community Hospital in Tallassee, Alabama, was born January 12, 1940, in Lee County, Alabama.

Public viewing will be Sunday, September 29, 2024, from 2:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.

Mr. Mitchell will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the service.

He leaves to cherish his memory: seven children, Robert Charles Mennifield, Bernice Gray, Lamar Mennifield, Andre Lipscomb, Lydia Mitchell all of Opelika, AL, Tamekka (Jamauall) Peters of Auburn, AL and Felecia Evans of Birmingham, AL; two sisters, Shirley Ann Mitchell Swanson and Lillie Burton both of Opelika, AL; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Mitchell of Opelika, AL and Verona Mitchell of Syracuse, NY; a special friend, Regina Williams of Auburn, AL; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

To Shirley Ann and family. I was sorry to hear about sonny. We were the last of the gang, that came up together now there is only you and me. So many memories we had together, with Jimmy, Toot Emanuel,and Arthur Charles. Not only in Opelika, but when him Toot and Jimmy moved to Syracuse and I moved to Massachusetts. We still stayed in touch with each other and also Rufus Morris. They are all gone now, and me and you will complete the chapter. Don't go anywhere yet because I intend to be here for a while longer.stay strong little sister. Love you always Clarence Taylor
