Obituary For Willie Lee "Poke" Melton, Jr.
Graveside service for Willie Melton, 65, of Auburn, AL, will be at 12:00 noon, Thursday, October 14, 2021, at Garden Hills Cemetery, 1218 Frederick Road, Opelika, Alabama 36801, Bishop Kenneth Carter will officiate.
Mr. Melton, who passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Piedmont Midtown Hospital in Columbus, Georgia, was born March 1, 1956, in Lee County, Alabama.
Public viewing will be Wednesday, October 13, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (Facial covering is required).
He leaves to cherish his memory: one son, Russell C. Melton of Auburn, AL; mother, Mavis Melton of Opelika, AL; four sisters, Peggy Cooper, Joyce Buchanan both of Opelika, AL, Brenda Peacock of Dothan, AL and Evelyn Smith of Murfreesboro, TN; three aunts, Margie Fears of Opelika, AL, Marie (Marion) Jones of Stockton, CA and Janie Patterson of San Diego, CA; two uncles, Arthur (Beatrice) Melton and George Allen both of Albany, NY; two cousins as brothers, Jonathan Fears and Gregory (Janet) Fears both of Opelika, AL; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins , co-workers (work buddies) and friends.

I remember when we played football together with The Eagles at The Rec Center and one game when Poke was on defense he ran down caught rusher from behind Twice, two different game saving tackles. We ended up being Undefeated that season and Rec Directed told us that we wére the Best football team that ever played at the Rec.
