Obituary For Yolonda Carol Gunn
Funeral service for Yolonda Gunn, 59, of Opelika, AL, will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 14, 2026, at St. Mark A.M.E Church, 4141 Anderson Road, Opelika, AL, 36801 with interment in Garden Hills Cemetery, 1218 Frederick Road, Opelika, AL, 36801, Reverend Jonathan Benton will officiate.
Ms. Gunn, who passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026 at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, was born July 9, 1967, in Lee County, Alabama.
Public viewing will be Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Ms. Gunn will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the service.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory: a loving mother, Mildred Gunn of Opelika, AL; one sister, Bridgett (Lawrence) Martin of Snellville, GA; one brother, Earnest Gunn of Opelika, AL; three aunts, Rita (Darryl) Johnson, Terrie (Carnell) Maddox both of Opelika, AL and Beverly (Townes) Douglas of Alabaster, AL; two uncles, Gregory (Brigitte) Jackson and Stanley Peters both of Opelika, AL; three great-aunts, Ernesteen Maycock of Miami, FL, Essie Johnson and Bernice Rowell both of Montgomery, AL; three nieces, Angelique Martin of Dallas, TX, Briana Beavers of Selma, AL and Jessica Martin of Birmingham, AL; two nephews, Christion Robinson of Opelika, AL and Lawrence “Alex” Martin IV of Dunwoody, GA; special friend, Brandon Tompkins of Tuskegee, AL; a host of cousins and friends.
The family of the late Ms. Yolonda Carol Gunn gratefully acknowledges and deeply appreciates every act of kindness shown during our time of bereavement. Your prayers, cards, telephone calls, flowers, and comforting words have been a source of strength and encouragement to us.
We extend special thanks to the compassionate and supportive staff of East Alabama Medical Center and Spencer Cancer Center for the care they provided. We are also deeply grateful to her beloved aunt, Rita Faye Johnson, for the devoted care, comfort, and support she provided throughout Yolonda’s illness.

My prayers are sent for the family. What fond memories I have of the beautiful young lady I looked up to as a picture of beauty, grace, and kindness as we were growing up as young girls on bus #9.
