Alma Juanita Austin
June 13, 1949 - December 31, 2025
“All cares and troubles I leave behind, saved by heavenly grace.”
Alma Juanita Brown Austin was born on June 13, 1949, in Charlottesville,
Virginia, to the late Mary Alma Oliver and Norman Brown. Alma was called
home to be with the Lord on December 31, 2025, at the University of
Virginia Hospital, surrounded by family and friends who loved her dearly.
Alma accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and joined Fork Union
Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful and devoted member. Over
the years, she served the church in various capacities, always willing to
lend her time, talents, and quiet strength in service to others.
Alma graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School and, in 1968,
married the love of her life, Curtis Austin. From this union, they were
blessed with four children: Curtis, Jr., Rhonda, Jermaine, and Anita.
Affectionately known as “Nita”, she was a quiet yet strong, principled
woman. She spoke with kindness and grace but never hesitated to express
herself when necessary. She embodied both compassion and strength,
understanding that there was a time to speak and a time to listen.
Together, Curtis and Alma created a home rooted in respect, kindness, and
resilience. These core values were the foundation of their family and were
lovingly passed down to their children. Alma valued quality over quantity
and kept her circle of friends small, believing that deeper connections are
formed through close and meaningful bonds. She was a trusted friend, a
confidant, and someone who loved wholeheartedly.
Alma enjoyed shopping, discussing current events, and, most of all,
spending quality time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Curtis Austin; her
brothers, Cleo, James and Robert Perkins; sister, Lena Somerville, sister-
in-law, Getrude Crenshaw, brother-in laws, Russell Osborne, Clyde Austin
and Charles Lee Brown.
Alma’s cherished memory will live on through her children: Curtis Austin,
Jr., Rhonda Austin, Jermaine Austin (Bridget), and Anita Barrett (William);
her grandchildren: Jah’car Austin, Jasiah Barrett, Jace Barrett, and
Gabrielle Austin; her in-laws: Corareen Jackson; Ernest Austin; William
Austin (Janice); Pearl Washington (Douglas); Luvinia Taylor (Willie);
Patricia Austin; Gladys Marie Johnson (James); Cindy Brown, Ricky
Brown(Laura) and Michael Brown (Doris). She is also survived by her
extended “bonus” family members brothers, Ernest Kyle and John Hocker;
and the Perkins family— Gracie Thomas, John Perkins, Mary Moore,
George Perkins, Bascom Perkins, Yvonne Spencer, and Lucinda
Saulisbury—as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted
friends.
Alma’s legacy of faith, love, strength, and wisdom will forever live and
remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
