William Leon Smith was born on February 3, 1950, in Rice,Virginia. He was the oldest of four children born to the late Vester and Berlean Smith and preceded in death by his sister Lillian Ann Smith. At the age of 11 after following the death of his father, his mother moved the family to Philadelphia,Pennsylvania, where Leon spent most of his life. In June 2025,he returned to Virginia. He departed this life and was called from labor and received his reward on December 27, 2025, peacefully in his home in Farmville, VA.

Leon was a loving and devoted husband to the late Mildred Elaine Smith. He was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. Affectionately known as Uncle Lee to everyone he met. Leon truly lived up to the name “an uncle” to many, whether by blood or by bond. He was good-hearted and generous, always willing to share what he had, offer a helping hand, or give sound advice. Yet, while his heart was kind,Uncle Lee was no fool, he carried wisdom, discernment, and a quiet strength that commanded respect.

Known for his warm sense of humor, Leon had a way of making people laugh and feel at ease, often leaving a smile wherever he went. He was a loyal and devoted friend to many someone you could depend on, confide in, and trust without question. He also shared a special bond with his cousin, who was dear to him like a sister, a relationship rooted in love, trust, and lifelong companionship.

Leon attended Prince Edward County Public Schools, and after relocating to Philadelphia, he attended Philadelphia Public Schools later graduating from Thomas Edison High School. He worked as a truck driver for many years at Sears and AlfredAngelo and later furthered his education to become a licensed electrician.

Leon and Mildred were married for 49 years. From this union came two sons, Leon C. Smith (Tabitha) and William D. Smith, along with Tracey Frazier, Jerome Williams and Eva Williams.

Leon was a faithful member of the Moore Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He accepted Christ at an early age and remained steadfast in his service to the Lord throughout his life. He was deeply dedicated to his neighborhood and to everyone who came into his presence, always willing to help, uplift, and stand firm in his faith.

Leon leaves to cherish his memory of his brother, Sylvester Smith (Andrea), his sister, Mable Turner (Steven), his beloved cousin who was like a sister to him Sophie Lomax, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, many of whom proudly and lovingly called him Uncle Lee.
