Kenneth W. Boyd, Sr., affectionately known as “Ken” or “Kenny,” passed away on September 18, 2025. Born on March 25, 1952 in Frederick, MD, he was the son of the late Maurice Boyd, Sr. and Sarah Boyd.
A gifted athlete, Ken excelled at Frederick High School in basketball and track and field before continuing his basketball career at Boston University. There, he became one of the program’s top players, scoring more than 1,400 points and earning induction into the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.
He went on to play professionally with the New Orleans Jazz in the NBA and later in the Eastern Basketball Association.
Kenny will be remembered for his talent, determination, and the dignity with which he carried himself both on and off the court.
Kenny is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth Robinson; maternal grandparents, Arthur and Geneva Snowden; siblings: Marlene Foreman, Michael Boyd, Geneva Boyd, Raylene Riddick-Robinson and Chris Randolph; aunts: Patsy Snowden and Catherine (Willard) Davis; uncles: James (Josephine) Snowden, Russell (Shirley) Snowden and Calvin (Gene) Snowden (Joanne); nephew, Dwight Wesley Leeks, Jr; and great niece, Riana Boyd.
He is survived by his spouse of 38 years, Mary Boyd; his children: Dawn Brooks-Tharps (Will) of Ellicott City, MD, Kenny Boyd, Jr. (Monica) of Manassas, VA, Kenneth Boyd of Charlotte, NC, David Boyd of Lithonia, GA, Vanessa Williams of Athens, GA, Antoine Williams of Athens, GA and Ali Reid (Shena) of Athens, GA; siblings: Maurice Boyd, Jr. (Martha) of Frederick, MD, Katherine Christian (Jerome) of Hagerstown, MD, Don Boyd of Frederick, MD, Ivan Randolph (Cheryl) of Hagerstown, MD and Sharon Thomas of Frederick, MD; 21 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 27, 2025 at The Chapel of Jackson-McWhorter Funeral Home, 1253 West Broad Street, Athens, GA.
