Obituary For Deaconess Mrs Marjorie Terrell Holloway

Marjorie Terrell Holloway was born on May 19, 1932 in the City of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, formerly known as Pablo Beach, to Sandy and Emmaline Terrell. As the oldest of three children, she attended Jacksonville Beach Colored School #144, Douglas Anderson Junior High School #107 and graduated from Old Stanton High School Class of 1950. She matriculated at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts Degree in Reading. Marjorie’s teaching career began and ended in Duval County. She taught for fifteen years at Jacksonville Beach Colored #144, for another five years she was a reading instructor and then she transferred to Seabreeze Elementary School, where she educated young minds for eighteen years. Marjorie was essential in providing intellectual stimulation in the molding of young minds for thirty-eight years before she retired in 1994. During her years of teaching, Ms. Marjorie Terrell met and married Mr. James Terry (Doc) Holloway and they were blessed with one daughter, Vallie M. Holloway, PhD.

As Entrepreneurs The Holloway's owned several businesses including The Holloway's Steakhouse, the premier restaurant in the Afro American Community.

As A Servant of the community, she volunteered for three years at the Mission House Compassion By The Sea, in the Advocate Room as a Kulik’s Closet Worker, Donation and Pantry Sorter. Mrs. Holloway joined a group of former teachers, teachers at Jacksonville Beach Elementary School #144 and concerned citizens to secure the old school building built in 1939. This was achieved after securing a grant from the State of Florida to get the building relocated and The Rhoda L. Martin Cultural Heritage Center established. Beginning in 2007, Marjorie was an active instructor for the Great Leaps Program located within The Rhoda L. Martin Cultural Heritage Center until 2011. Additionally, Mrs. Holloway also served on the Code Enforcement Board for the City of Jacksonville Beach, which led to many houses in the area to be upgraded for minimal cost.

In addition to her community service, she found great joy in going to Gail Baker Center for various activities with other seniors and her favorite pastime was playing BINGO for more than 50 years.

As A Lifelong Member of The Founding Family of Saint Andrew African Methodist Episcopal Church, Marjorie grew up in the church which was established in 1905 by the late Rhoda L. Martin, the paternal great great grandmother of the Terrell Family. During the 90 plus years of attendance, since her Christening at Saint Andrew African Methodist Episcopal Church, Mrs. Holloway was an active dedicated member who operated as an officer and member in various capacities in the church. She was a member of the Sunday School, ACE League, 5th Sunday Mass Meetings, Junior Choir, Choir #1, The Alice M. Graham now Josephine G. Pitts Women’s Missionary Society, The Lay Organization, now known as The Lewis N. Palmer, Jr. Lay Organization, The Board of Trustees and Pablo Renewal In Duval East. Holloway in absentia as a Deaconess in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Eleventh Episcopal District, Suwannee North District Reverend Elizabeth Elaine Yates Presiding Elder and Reverend Helen D. Jackson, PhD former pastor of Saint Andrew African Methodist Episcopal Church.
