Obituary For Ben Frazer, Jr.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ben Frazer Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed community member. Born on September 25, 1929, to the union of Ben Sr. and Bertha Heard-Fraizer, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Ben transitioned peacefully to eternal rest on March 11, 2025.

Ben obtained his education via the Spartanburg Public School System. A proud United States Army veteran, he nobly served his country during the Korean War, embodying the resilience and fortitude that defined his generation. He was honorably discharged after three years of meritorious service on behalf of humanity.

A steel worker by trade, Ben spent many years working as a laborer for Sheet & Tube in Youngstown, Ohio, until its closing, where he earned the respect of his colleagues and the admiration of his community. His dedication to his work was matched only by his commitment to his faith and community service

Ben was unwavering faith in God and in his service to humanity. Ben was a devoted member of St. Andrewes African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served with distinction on the Senior Usher Board, Senior Steward Board, and Brotherhood Ministry. Ben renewed and accepted the call to salvation and now his faith has become sight.

His dedication to his faith and community was further evidenced by his leadership as a Past Master of Coventry Lodge #59 and his role as an administrative officer for District 86 in 1997. He was also an honorary past illustrious Potentate of Temple #210 and held the esteemed title of Thirty-Second Degree of the United Supreme Council Benzaleel Consistory #15.

His commitment to justice and equality was exemplified by his involvement with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), reflecting his deep love for his community and a strive towards a better future for all.

The youth and young adults in the community will remember his commitment to their safety within the city. He was a school crossing guard at the former Eagle Heights Elementary School. His motivating and encouraging words as he helped to set the tenor of the day for scholars as they enter the building.

He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Peggy Wainwright- Frazer of fifty-nine years. His legacy has been entrusted to his grandchildren grandson, Roxanne Frazer of Charlotte, NC and Jeremy Frazer of Cleveland, OH for the generations to keep alive and emboldened.

Ben also leaves precious memories and moments with his sisters Anna Ruth Glover, Joann Frazer both of Spartanburg, SC and an expansive host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Crossing into eternity, Ben was escorted to the ancestral gathering which included his parents, daughter Rochelle “Buttons” Frazer, siblings Ella Sims, Jospeh Frazier, Pearlie Sheldon, Ida Mae Robinson, Eddie Frazier, Addie Littlejohn, Rozena Hall, Delores “Dee” Mae Turner and Frances Reed who preceded him in Heaven.

In this time of reflection and remembrance, we take solace in the cherished memories of Ben Frazer Jr., whose indelible spirit and unwavering love will forever resonate in our hearts. May he rest in peace.

There will be a family visitation to receive friends at 9:30am and the Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held in his honor, at St. Andrewes African Methodist Episcopal Church, 521 West Earle Ave., on Saturday March 22 at 10:00 am where we will celebrate his life and legacy. Pastor Jeannette Hubbard will preside and officiate the services and Ben’s cousin, Pastor J. Dwayne Heard will be the eulogist.

The services will be live streamed on the Facebook page of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, allowing family and friends near and far to partake in this sacred occasion.

At this time of intimate need and personal loss, the beloved wife and soulmate of Ben Frazer elected to entrust the Ministry of Comfort & Care, along with Transitional After-Care Arrangements to the J. E. Washington Funeral Services, 2234 Glenwood Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio, 330.782.8500.
