Obituary For Charles "Mickey" Edward Pegues

Charles Edward Pegues, known to family & friends as Mickey, was born May 9,1948 in Youngstown, Ohio to the union of Charles Fisher Pegues & Edwina Mason Pegues. Mickey was the second borne and the eldest son. He peacefully left this world on June 6, 2024, in Youngstown, OH, surrounded by the love of his devoted sister, Francine Pegues.

Charles graduated in 1966 from South High School and attended the Ohio State University from 1972 to1974. He traveled extensively around South America studying languages, visiting historical sites such as Machu Picchu and establishing friendships with a headhunter tribe in Brazil.

Charles returned to the states to be a father to his son Dwaylon Alexander and to explore development opportunities. He was successful in developing a $750,000 project to purchase a black urban radio station but was unsuccessful in obtaining a license.

In time, Charles was instrumental in founding the Hiram Lodge Number 6 of the Masons. He became the controller of the Small World Daycare in 1978.

Frustrated with the lack of responsiveness to Youngstown citizens’ concerns, in 1982 Mickey launched a campaign for the office of the mayor. Although he was not successful in his quest, he continued to invest his passion to make the community better. Mickey started the Large World Construction company and eventually worked for Lorco Business Systems until 2010.

His community and civic service include serving on the board of trustees for the former Centenary United Methodist Church and chairman of the church’s food program.

Charles leaves his legacy to his sons Dwaylon Alexander of Arizona and Elijah McCollough of Youngstown. His memory will be cherished by his sister Francine Pegues of Detroit and his grandchildren Xavier Alexander, Jalisa Alexander and Dajalon Alexander of Detroit. Additionally, he leaves an expansive score of nieces, nephews and friends that will remember and uphold his enduring heritage.

Now among the ancestors, he was reunited with his parents, and two brothers Norman “Pete” Pegues and Damon Pegues, all who preceded him into eternity. Though Charles may no longer walk among us, his memory will live on in our hearts and minds forever.

Let us come together to celebrate his life, share stories, and find peace in the fond memories we hold dear.

There will be a public viewing at the Jaylex Event Center, 2110 Glenwood Avenue, Youngstown on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at 11:00am and the Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11:30 am with Rev. Lewis Macklin presiding as the officiant and Pastor Gary Mariano serving as the celebrant.

As we reflect on the life of Charles Edward Pegues, let us find comfort in the knowledge that he now rests in eternal peace, watching over us with a kind and loving gaze. May his spirit soar high, and may his memory be a blessing to us all.

At this most intimate time, Charles Edward Pegues elected to entrust the Ministry of Comfort & Care and After-Care Arrangements to the J. E. Washington Funeral Services, 2234 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown OH 330.782.8500
