Deacon James L. White, Sr, 90 of Youngstown, Ohio transitioned peacefully to eternal life on Monday, June 22, 2026, after a period of declining health. James was born on June 30, 1935, in Hayneville, Alabama.
He was the son of Lillie White Pierce who preceded him in death along with his wife of over 60 years Deaconess Christine White, sister Della M. Jones, and daughter Gloria Christine Peeples.
James was a graduate of R. B. Hudson High School in Selma, Alabama. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960. After being honorably discharged, he relocated to Youngstown Ohio where he worked as a steelworker and as an electrician for Youngstown State University. James always had an entrepreneurial spirit and started White Van Lines Inc., his own moving company which he operated for over 50 years.
Deacon White's influence permeated the Youngstown community through decades of dedicated service and leadership. Over the years, he was involved with several church and community organizations including service to God as a Deacon, lifetime membership in The Robert’s Deliberating Club (Member since 1975- including service as President), The Mahoning-Shenango Valley Baptist Deacons Association (Since 1978 - Serving as its President from 1992 to 1994). Additionally, he was a member of the Rising Sun Lodge #90.
His impact extended through his mentorship of younger generations, his active participation in community organizations, and his role as a stabilizing presence for his family, extended family and social circle.
Beyond his formal community roles, James was beloved for his warm personality and shared interests that brought people together. A devoted Cleveland Browns fan, he often gathered with family to watch games, sharing his passionate enthusiasm for the team's victories and defeats.
Deacon James’ love for barbecuing became legendary within his circle, especially for church events and family gatherings where his expertly prepared meals were enjoyed by all. His barbecue skills were as much a part of his community legacy as his leadership roles.
These simple yet meaningful traditions created lasting memories and strengthened bonds within his extended family and church community, making him not just a respected leader but also a cherished friend and host who made everyone feel welcome.
He leaves to mourn his passing: sons James L. White Jr. (Cynthia) and Warren L. White (Wanda), aunt Ernestine McDonald, sister-in-law Helen Peterson Cooper, thirteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and longtime special friends; Terry Earnest and Elisha Earnest.
As we honor Deacon James's remarkable life, family and friends will gather for a Celebration of His Life service at Third Baptist Church, 1177 Parkhill Drive, on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Prior to the service, a Public Viewing will take from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, allowing all who knew and loved him to pay their respects. Pastor Vincent E. Peterson II will officiate, and Rev.
