Campbell, OH - Dr. Lashale Diane Pugh, born on September 9, 1959, the daughter of Earl “Haywood” Pugh and Leola (Rodgers) Martin in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026, after a valiant fight against cancer. A remarkable daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Dr. Pugh dedicated her life to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of humanity through her work in the field of Geography.

As an esteemed Assistant Executive Director at the Northeast Ohio Community Resilience Centre, formerly known as Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition, in Cleveland, she used her passion and groundbreaking research, contributing significantly to understanding the impact of the potential loss of life and the effects of the West Nile Virus making her a pivotal figure in the area of medical and human geography.

Dr. Pugh's academic journey began at Youngstown State University, where she earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in Geography. She went on to inspire countless students as a professor at YSU, sharing her passion for the environment and human health. Her commitment to community well-being extended beyond the classroom, serving on the board of Goodness Grows and leading initiatives for breast cancer awareness.

Dr. Pugh’s contributions since the inaugural Mahoning Valley African American Male Wellness Walk have led to the creation of a full-fledged agency. Her intellect and insightfulness were revered, showcasing her commitment to enhancing the quality of lives of those around her.

An advocate for environmental conservation, she was known for her recycling efforts, dedication to reducing microplastics, and love for bird watching. Dr. Pugh had a zest for life that was reflected in her joyful gatherings, many of which featured her legendary pig roasts were epic and featured an array of live jazz music- her favorite. Proceeds were used to help those impacted by breast cancer. Crafty and talented, she found serenity in the art of crocheting.

Dr. Lashale’s legacy will be preserved by her beloved daughter, Joncquil Hope; cherished grandchildren, Jaleah Harris and Amari; siblings Robert "Butch" (Carmen) Johnson, Jr., George (Samoia) Martin III; Gwendolyn Casey; aunt, Theresa Rodgers-Faircloth, along with a cadre of family and friends blessed to have known her. Her beloved canine companion, Luna, will also miss her presence.

Dr. Lashale’s journey into eternity reunited her with her parents; stepfather Rev. George Martin Jr.; brothers Juan “King” E. Pugh, Earl Darnell Butler and nephew Andre Harrison.

"Laugh heartily, smile often, enjoy time with your friends" were the last words of wisdom captured and shared by Dr. Pugh, reflecting the essence and her lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy will surely live on in the hearts of many.

Family and friends are encouraged to gather in joyous remembrance of a woman who embodied the spirit of love, laughter, and advocacy. Dr. Pugh's life will be celebrated on Friday September 11, 2026, at the Jaylex Event Center, 2110 Glenwood Ave.

The memorial service will commence at 12:00 PM, with Rev. Lewis Macklin presiding, followed by a Celebration of Life reception at 1:30 PM. In her honor, it is requested you consider wearing shades of purple, her favorite color, which speaks to her passion and purpose.
