With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of George Cherry Pickett, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us peacefully at the age of 96 on December 21, 2024. Born on April 6, 1928, in a world that has seen so much change, George lived a life rich with stories, laughter, and the warmth of enduring friendships in his cherished hometown within the Shenango Valley.

A gentle spirit with a strong sense of community, George was known for his kindness, wisdom, and the infectious joy he brought to those around him. He cherished the moments spent with his family and friends, always eager to share a good story or lend a listening ear. His heart was as vast as his laughter, filling rooms with warmth and turning ordinary days into treasured memories.

George lived a life rich with experiences, including his service in the United States Army from October 16, 1950, to September 5, 1956, where he proudly held the rank of Corporal. George proudly served his country while in the miliary, his commitment to service and dedication to his fellow soldiers remained a source of pride throughout his life, and he carried the lessons and values of that time with him always.

As we reflect on George’s life, we remember a man who was more than just a veteran; he was a cornerstone of his community. George’s dedication to his country and community was evident in every endeavor to foster a better quality of life for all.

He met the former Ruth Alford in Aliquippa, PA and they united in holy matrimony on December 24, 1952, and they relocated to Farrell, PA. The union was solid for SEVENTY-ONE YEARS, until parted at death! This union brought forth two children Bill Pickett and Javerna Pickett Chapman.

A man of deep faith, George was a member of Ruth AME Zion Church where he opened his heart and doors of the church as an usher. He was also engaged in supporting the youth ministry, providing supervision and transportation. As champion for social justice, he was an engaged member of the Mercer County Branch of the NAACP from 1982-1996, serving on the prison ministry unit.

He leaves a shared legacy with his daughter Javerna Pickett-Chapman (Jonesboro, GA), former daughter-n-law Jonita Simmers (Sharon, PA), brother Eugene (Johnnie) Campbell (New York), grandchildren Aaron (Mikey) Evans & wife Alicia (Youngstown, Ohio), D'Ondrea Ruth Pickett (Sharon, PA) and Ja'Nyce (Noelle) Pickett (Youngstown, Ohio) along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

As George’s faith became sight, he was reunited with his parents, soul mate Ruth Pickett, son William Pickett and sister Dorothy Orr where he joins them in eternity. As we reflect on the many memories we hold dear—his infectious laughter, his wise words, and his heartfelt advice—we find comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on in all of us. George was a pillar of strength in our lives, and his absence will be felt deeply.

The Pickett family invites friends and all who knew him in the community to join them as George’s life and the legacy of love is honored. These services will be a time to reflect on George's remarkable journey, share stories, and honor the profound impact he made on our lives.

A public viewing will take place on Saturday December 28, 2024, at 10:00 am at the Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, 95 West Connelly Ave, Sharon PA followed by a Celebration of Life, with military honors, at 11:00 am as Pastor Marion Wheeler presides. As we say goodbye to George, let us remember his gentle spirit and the light he brought to the world. His love will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who he held dear.
