Obituary For George Greer

Columbus,OH- George Greer, was born on March 24, 1949, in Youngstown, Ohio. He was the seventh child born to the late Porter and Mattie S. Greer, confessing Jesus Christ as his Lord & Savoir at an early age. On March13, 2025, George entered eternity triumphantly after a tragic automobile encounter in Columbus, yet selflessly he extended life to others as an organ and tissue donor.

George attended East High School where he learned to play the drums and became a very talented drummer in the high school band. George also went out for the football team, being selected as a First String Running Back due to his superior athleticism in the sport.

George enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1968 after graduating from East High School. George’s military career spanned eight years as an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist. Stationed in various locations throughout the world including New York (Griffin AFB); Vietnam (Da Nang AFB) and California (McClellan AFB). George’s dedication, expertise, and unwavering work ethic earned him numerous awards and citations during his eight-year service in the United States Air Force. George retired from the US Air Force in May of 1976 and continued his work at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, California as a Government Contract Worker for many years until retirement. Post retirement George relocated to Columbus, Ohio and worked as a security guard for Allied Universal Services until his untimely passing.

George was a devoted spouse to his wife of 16 years Joslyn. He was a very tender-hearted sibling and uncle to his many, many nieces, nephews as well as grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. From sharing his love of music, teaching driving skills or installing security lights, George was always willing to lend a helping hand, embodying the teachings of his mother, Mattie S. Greer, striving for peace with everyone he encountered.

In his personal time, George enjoyed playing the drums and could often be heard playing the drums from the basement when visiting his sister Jean, which brought him great joy and fulfillment. He had a keen interest in music and his enthusiasm was infectious. George also loved spending time with his family and celebrating the milestones of his nieces and nephews. He could be seen at many family gatherings “cutting a rug” especially when the DJ dropped that “Old School” R&B.

George's legacy is one of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, and co-workers. He will be always remembered for his warm smile, generous spirit, and as the man with many phones and gadgets.

George will forever remain in the hearts and memories of all he touched, leaving to cherish his memory, his beloved wife Joslyn Greer; Sisters Rose Lee (Orlando, Fl); Porter Jean Davis (Youngstown, Oh); Alicia (Terry) McKinney (Canfield, Oh); Brothers Robert (Sylvia) Greer (Youngstown, Oh) and William (Wanda) Greer (Columbus, Oh), and an abundance of nieces, nephews, grand as well as great grand nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his beloved parents Porter and Mattie S. Greer; Brother John Greer (1997); Sister Emma A. Frederick (1994); and Beatrice Greer (2018); Sister-In Law- Fanessa Franklin Ealey (Louisiana).

George’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. He leaves a legacy of service and family values that will resonate for generations to come.

Family and friends will gather for a heartfelt celebration of George's life on his birthday. A public viewing will be held Monday March 24, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 707 Tabernacle Blvd., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Martha E. Taylor presiding. Following the service, George will be laid to rest at with military honors at the National Cemetery in Rittman, OH.
