Gregory Allen Davis was born on Saturday, April 24, 1954, in Youngstown, Ohio. He was Mable Catherine Davis’s second eldest child. His older brother, Terry, was born a few years earlier. Shortly thereafter, his mother married John Thomas Brown. Greg’s family grew to include younger brother, Larry and younger sister, Susan. The family of six lived on Foster Street and later resided at Ridge Ave before ultimately settling at West Indianola Ave. As a family, they would all pile into their black Chrysler and drive to visit family members in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
By all accounts, Greg was a very intelligent boy and a good student. He began his high school studies at South High School in Youngstown, but eventually transferred to and graduated from University School, a college prep school located in Cleveland. From there, Greg went on to Ohio Wesleyan College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Greg was also musically inclined, which ran in the family. He chose to play guitar while his younger brother Larry was a percussionist. Greg had a passion for jazz music, with Miles Davis and John Coltrane as his favorite artists. Although Greg opted not to play any competitive sports in school, he was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Eventually, Greg started his own family with Patricia Paige welcoming his first son, Rashan Davis. He would then marry Robin Clark who already had a son, Jay Greene, from a previous relationship. Greg always considered Jay as his own son as well. A few years later, the couple welcomed their youngest son Enrie Davis.
The family lived together, not far from his brothers, in Austin, Texas for many years. Greg purchased a Nintendo Entertainment Gaming System for his sons. His nieces and nephews always loved visiting Uncle Greg so they could play games with their cousins.
Enrie fondly remembers listening to Greg play his guitar accompanying Michael Jackson songs. Time was very kind to Greg allowing him the full joy and experience of becoming a grandfather through his first son Rashan who had his own son, Avery.
Greg was independent and entrepreneurial. He was a man who always strove to make his own way. He wanted to build his own wealth. This is a generational trait that Enrie inherited, crediting his own work ethic and hustle mentality to his beloved father.
Unfortunately, Greg’s entrepreneurial aspirations gave way to significant health challenges for the last chapter of his life. He lost his ability to walk however continued being a man who was available for his family until his body could not carry on any further.
Now that he has obtained the ultimate healing, Greg’s legacy is entrusted to his sons Rashan Davis, Enrie Davis, Jay Greene; siblings: Terry Davis (Iris), Susan Moorer; grandson Avery Davis; nephews: Terence M. Davis (Romy), Christopher A. Moorer, Lawrence David Brown (Jennifer), John Thomas Brown; nieces Kasandra Maria Brown, Alaina Johnson (Bruno), Melva Winn (Jason); grandnieces: Elliana Davis Bryand (Vincent), Brianna Muriel (Allan), Dylan Winn, Ashley Brown, Aleighyanah Washington, Rayshon Washington; grandnephews: Dominic Brown, Abraham Brown, Andrew Brown, Christion Whitaker, Benjamin Udeh, Grayson Winn; great grandnephew: Eli Muriel; Great Grandniece: Ayla Muriel.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Thomas Brown in 1994, his mother, Mable Catherine (Davis) Brown in 2021, and his brother, Larry Renard Brown, in 2025.
As we mourn Greg’s passing, we also take this opportunity to reflect on the joy and love he brought into our lives. His spirit will forever guide us, and he will be missed dearly.
In honor of Gregory’s life, a memorial service will be held at the Jaylex Event Center, 2110 Glenwood Ave. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM where Rev. Lewis W.
