In the quiet moments of life, we often remember those who have touched our hearts, and today we pause to honor the beautiful spirit of Larry Dunlap, who left this world unexpectedly on June 24, 2025, at his home in Butler, PA.
Born on December 18, 1960, in Sharon, PA, Larry was the beloved son of Charlotte Baker Dunlap and the late John "Bubba" Dunlap. He was a proud graduate of Farrell High School, class of 1978, where he showcased his talent as an exceptional athlete. He was a member of the 1976 WOIAL basketball team and the 1977 championship team at Farrell. An outstanding baseball player, he was named as the “Best Baseball Strikeout Player” of all time.
Larry's prowess on the field led him to a full scholarship at Thiel College, but in a show of devotion to his country, he chose instead to enlist in the United States Air Force, serving from July 1978 until his honorable discharge on April 1981.
Larry was a gentle giant, known for his unwavering love of family and friends, and a heart that welcomed all. He was an avid supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers and a loyal follower of the Cleveland Cavaliers, passionately cheering for his teams with a spirit that was infectious.
His faith was steadfast, and he actively participated in the Temple of Praise Cathedral Church of God in Christ, where his enthusiasm and laughter brightened the lives of those around him.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted mother, Charlotte Dunlap; his two children, Larry "Poppy" Dunlap and Denise Mathis; and his grandchildren, Zechariah, Ciara, Nasir, Saraya, and Nalayah Dunlap. He is also survived by his brother, John (Rhona) Dunlap III; his sister, Rita Dunlap; a godbrother, Courtland ‘Cory’ Scales; nieces Katrice Harrison and Jeniyah Dunlap; and nephews Jeremy (Jenna) Dunlap, Jermaine Dunlap, and Karter Burkes, who will carry his spirit forward throughout their lives.
Larry was welcomed into the arms of eternity by his beloved father; cherished daughter, Evelyn Mathis; and his revered grandparents, Ralph & Rita Baker, and John Sr. & Viola Dunlap. In this time of sorrow, let us remember Larry not just for the end of his journey but for the countless moments of joy and love he brought to our lives. May we carry his memory in our hearts as we say goodbye, knowing that the essence of his spirit will remain with us forever.
To honor Larry's life, a memorial service was held at the Temple of Praise on July 3, 2025, with Bishop Melvin T. Baker II officiating. Larry will ultimately be laid to rest alongside his father in the serene meadows of Oakwood Cemetery.
At this most intimate time, the beloved family of Larry Dunlap elected to entrust the Ministry of Comfort & Care and Professional After Care Arrangements with J. E. Washington Funeral Services, 1059 Hamilton Ave, Farrell PA, 16121 Phone (724) 983-1523
REMEMBER ME
Don’t remember me with sadness,
Don’t remember me with tears,
Remember all the laughter,
We’ve shared throughout the years.
Now I am contented,
That my life was worthwhile,
Knowing that as I passed along the way,
I made somebody smile.
When you are walking down the street,
And you’ve got me on your mind,
I’m walking in your footsteps,
Only half a step behind.
So please don’t be unhappy,
Just because I’m out of sight,
Remember that I’m with you,
Each morning, noon and night.
So sorry to hear about Larry's passing. So many good memories growing up together.John and family, you have my sincerest condolences.
Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
