Lynn Eric Hampton, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend, transcended peacefully into eternity on February 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after a well fought battle. Lynn was born, the son of Bessie Lee Hampton, on November 22, 1960, in Youngstown, OH. Lynn lived a life filled with love, dedication, and a profound appreciation for family and community
From infancy, he was nurtured by his loving grandparents Clemmie Blackshear & Queen Ola Bulger-Blackshear. Although Lynn's devoted grandfather passed on when Lynn was only eight years old; he was blessed to have a strong loving village, along with his beloved grandmother, to provide him with guidance and direction along life’s journey.
Lynn's spirited enthusiasm for sports extended to his passion for basketball as a former player at North High School, where he was fierce on the court just like the school’s bulldog mascot. Upon graduating from North High in 1979, Lynn continued the love of the game by engaging in local basketball league competition as a young adult. Although he played basketball, Lynn was a loyal Dallas Cowboys football fan.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Lynn served this country with nobility and honor until his discharge as a private first class. During his enlistment, Lynn completed the Building Maintenance Program sponsored by Handley Enterprises Inc. and the Material Storage and Handling Specialist Course at the U.S. Army Quartermaster School in Fort Lee, Virginia, further exemplifying his commitment to skill and service.
Lynn cherished his role as a laborer in the parks & natural resources sector, dedicating many years to the City of Youngstown’s Park & Recreation Department and the Mill Creek Metro Park District. Lynn recognized the value of maintaining and appreciating the serenity of nature.
Lynn’s devotion to his vocation paralleled his passion for family and community. He dearly loved his family, always making his wife, children and grandchildren main priorities. Known for his warmth and generosity, Lynn found joy in every family gathering, embarking on spontaneous road trips, and relishing every moment spent with his loved ones. He did not need a reason, season or occasion to pull out the grill. His laughter, kindness, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
As Lynn rests in the embrace of the comforting arms of God, his memory will be cherished by his devoted wife Arnita Hampton. The bond they shared cannot be broken even with death. Arnita was Lynn’s heart & rib, confidant and best friend. Together they shared a love and created a family that endured four decades and spans generations.
Lynn’s legacy is emboldened by his loving daughters Quashawna Hampton, Domonique (Anthony) Hampton-Parks, Felarian Hampton, Brittany Hampton, and son James "Quincy" Newell Sr, along with his grandchildren Tiy'an, Christian, La'Raiah, Leslie, Di'Sean. Lawrence, Trovon, NeVaeh, Aileah, Jaden, Rafiq, James, Dylan, Anthony, Gabrielle, Ayah, Nazim, Desean, Ja'maad, JaMaela, Michael and Amara.
Although an only child by birth, he was reared as a sibling by his cousin Theresa Bernice Fields, alongside her children Thelma Fields, Joanne Fields, John "Man" Fields Jr., Glenn “Doughnut’ Floyd, Anthony (Angela), Sadie Renee Fields, and Michael Fields.
Lynn will be remembered by mother-in-law Elnora Addison; sisters-in-law Juanita Pete, Erin Pete, and Mrs. Adrienne Winlock; cousins Mary Doss Carr, James Bell, Charles (Valencia) Bulger, Brenda (Malcolm) Kimble, Dr. Carol Staten, Lenore Southerland, Minnie Mae Ziegler, Robert Blackshear, Anita Blackshear, Aleen Blackshear.
Lynn was blessed to entrust his fond memories with his loving godmothers Charlotte Bradley, Norma Jean Smith and Viney “Ma” Shaw who were staunch supporters and champion, along with an abundance of family and friends.
Lynn now assumes his place among the elders at the ancestral table which includes his mother Bessie Lee Hampton, fathers-in-law Willis "Biggie" Southerland and Carl "Papa Smurf" Addison, both of whom he shared a very close bond; son Lawrence "Larry" Alexander Newell Jr.; grandparents Wille “Hamp” Hampton, Clemmie Blackshear, Queen Ola Blackshear; dear cousins Theresa "Bernice" Fields and Jeffrey Fields, all who preceded him into eternity.
The family wishes to publicly express heartfelt appreciation Lynn’s brother-in-law Keith Moore, sister Juanita Pete, sister-in-law Erin Pete, best friend Tina Jordan, cousins Joanne Fields, and Mary Doss Carr for the loving support. In accordance with Lynn’s expressed wishes, private intimate services were held.
At this time of intimate need and personal loss, the beloved family of Lynn Eric Hampton elected to entrust the Ministry of Comfort & Care, along with Transitional After-Care Arrangements to the J. E. Washington Funeral Services, 2234 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown OH 330.782.8500.
