Obituary For Rutherford "Russ" Linzia Hallman

Grand Blanc, Michigan- Rutherford Linzia Hallman, age 74, entered the loving presence of the Lord on May 12, 2026, in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Rutherford, known to many as Russ, was born on June 11, 1951, in Hubbard, Ohio to Thomas L. and Ruth Hallman, and after his mother’s passing, was lovingly raised with great devotion by Thelma D. Hallman.

In his youth, Rutherford attended church alongside his parents and siblings at Triedstone Baptist Church. As his spiritual journey continued, he later became a devoted member of Phillips Chapel Church of God in Christ and Heavenly Place Church of God in Christ, where he faithfully served as both a Deacon and Trustee. His life reflected a quiet strength of faith, service, and dedication to his church community.

Rutherford attended school in Hubbard, Ohio, graduating in 1969. He later pursued Engineering studies at Youngstown State University and furthered his education through advanced Engineering coursework at Kettering University.

In his early working years, Rutherford held positions unloading train cars and later co-owned a painting company with his close friend, Sunny Johnson. However, the greater part of his distinguished professional career was devoted to General Motors, where he faithfully served for an extraordinary 53 years. During his tenure, Rutherford worked on the production line, became a skilled Tool and Die Maker, and briefly served in a supervisory role in Lordstown, Ohio.

In 1988, his passion for growth and innovation led him to pursue an Engineering apprenticeship, for which he was accepted. Through dedication and perseverance, he advanced to the position of Senior Die Design Engineer Processor Layout, contributing across multiple engineering disciplines.

Rutherford’s career was marked not only by professional excellence, but also by service, leadership, and compassion for others. He served approximately three years as a Benefits Representative until the merger of the Pontiac and Flint, Michigan plants in 2015.He was a proud and active member of the United Auto Workers, where he remained deeply engaged in union and political affairs. He faithfully attended rallies and union meetings and generously gave his time to charitable initiatives, including support for The News Voice and Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Russ found joy in life’s simple and meaningful pleasures. He loved sharing good meals, listening to smooth jazz, and expressing his appreciation for fashion and automobiles. He also enjoyed reading, watching western films, gardening, bowling, and ballroom dancing, which he embraced both for enjoyment and exercise.

In recent years, Russ enjoyed playing chess and learning the saxophone as hobbies that brought him joy and mental stimulation. The combination of his lively spirit, sense of humor, and insight made his presence unforgettable to those who knew him. An engaging conversationalist, Russ brought great life to any gathering with his charm, intellect, and wit.

On August 3, 1974, Rutherford united in marriage with Bernise Jackson. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with two cherished daughters, Chantelle and Alicia, whom he lovingly referred to as “his baby girls.” A devoted father, he nurtured resilience, creativity and confidence in them. Rutherford deeply treasured his family and found his greatest joy in spending meaningful time with those he loved most. He was the brother, uncle, cousin and friend where no distance was too great for him to travel to remain connected and supportive.

In his later years, one of Russ’ greatest joys was spending as much time as possible with his beloved grandson, Solomon. Whether building things together or taking peaceful walks, those moments brought him immense happiness and fulfillment. It made Russ’ heart smile to watch Solomon proudly driving the toy car and train he lovingly gifted to him - simple yet precious moments that became treasured memories for their family.

While deeply missed Rutherford’s enduring legacy will continue through the lives of his daughters Chantelle Hallman, Alicia Gooden, son-in-law Christopher, and grandson Solomon. He also leaves to cherish his memory, three sisters, Lenora Jefferson and Loretta Crenshaw (Paul) of Youngstown and Esther Broomer (Bennie) of Wilmington, Delaware, sister-in-law Jill Conway (Charles) of Lorain, brothers-in-law Stafford Jackson (Bobbi Jean) of Liberty, and Louis Jackson (Simmie) of Hubbard - and a wide circle of extended family and friends.

As Russ entered eternity, he was reunited with his wife & soul mate, Bernice Hallman; parents; brothers, Juan Hallman and David Hallman, and sister Carmenia Wooldridge.

A celebration of Rutherford’s well lived life will be held at 10 am Saturday, June 6, 2026, at The Light Church, 1350 Katherine Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44505 with Pastor Mark Jackson officiating. Friends may call 9 am -10 am at the church for family visitation and public viewing. After the committal ceremony, Rutherford will be laid to rest among the ancestors at the Hubbard Union Cemetery. The Hallman family is emboldened by the promises of Genesis 28:15, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go.”
