In loving memory of the indomitable Shirley Ann Benton, a force of nature whose spirit touched the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Born on March 14, 1942, in Carrollton, GA, to the union of Jessie Mae Powell-North & Clarence North Jr., Shirley embraced life with unapologetic boldness until her passing September 26, 2024.
With a career as a habilitation specialist, Shirley made a lasting impact on the community through her work at Siffrin Residential assisting persons requiring additional independent living skills. While her services to humanity were significant, it was her larger-than-life personality and infectious spirit that truly defined her legacy.
Her heart was as big as her personality, and she relished her time spent at Hollywood Casino Gaming and Mountaineer Casino Resort, alongside special friends Carla, Estelle, and Pat, the Golden Girls of Youngstown. Their escapades were legendary, and the memories of their adventures will be forever cherished. Their epic unforgettable capers will last several lifetimes. Shirley’s appreciation for bingo, poker, blackjack, and spades was legendary.
Shirley's passion for games of chance was unrivaled, whether it was tonk, blackjack, biz wiz, squelch, or spades. Her competitive spirit and quick wit made her a formidable opponent, always ready with her infamous signature call to action: "Get the dice, pencil, and paper!"
In her unapologetically authentic self, Shirley embodied the true essence of living life to its fullest, never shying away from speaking her mind. Her sharp wit or tongue could cut deep like a surgeon’s precision. Proficient in cussing, she would unabashedly remind others of her authenticity citing, “What comes up, will come out!”
Her time living in Detroit added another chapter to her colorful story, where she left a lasting impact on all who crossed her path. Shirley embraced her authentic self, unafraid to express herself with honesty and no filters.
Yet, beneath her fiery exterior, she was fiercely devoted to her family. Her memory will be sustained by her brother Eric North. Though Shirley did not have children of her own, her love knew no bounds, leaving an enduring legacy through her adoring nieces and nephews. Her essence will radiate through the boldness and resilience she instilled in her massive score of family and friends.
As Shirley transitioned into eternity, she was reunited with her beloved ancestors which included her parents, husband Wardell Benton and siblings Ruth Woodard, Maryjo Hudson, Tonya North, Hallie North, Jesse North, Alton North, Richard North, all whom predeceased her.
Let us remember Shirley’s feisty charm and unwavering presence on her terms. In accordance to Shirley’s expressed wishes, there will only be a public viewing on Thursday, on October 3, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the chapel of the J. E. Washington Funeral Home, 2234 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown.
Bearing witness to her vibrant spirit, friends and loved ones are welcome to o informally share stories and laughter, recognizing a woman who lived authentically and fearlessly. Though she may be gone, her memory will forever remain a beacon of strength and inspiration for all who had the opportunity of knowing her.
At this time of intimate need and personal loss, the beloved family of Shirley Ann Benton elected to entrust the Ministry of Comfort & Care, along with Transitional After-Care Arrangements to the J. E. Washington Funeral Services, 2234 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown OH 330.782.8500
