Vohu S. Johnson, Jr, was born on May 18, 1938, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, to the union of Vohu Slocum, Sr. and Carrie Lou Mitchell Johnson. He peacefully passed away to be with the Lord on February 1, 2025, at the Hospice of the Valley in Boardman, Ohio. Vohu was known affectionately as “Little Brother” by his siblings and “Uncle Vo” by his nieces and nephews.
Vohu was educated in the New Castle Area School District and completed his secondary education at the New Castle Senior High School in 1955. He was employed at the General Motors facility in Lordstown upon its opening in 1966. He became a loan offer for the United Auto Workers of America during his tenure there.
Vohu was also an avid supporter of the Buckeye Review Newspaper, the only African American owned & operated publication in the Mahoning Valley, serving as its Circulation & Distribution Manager. He enjoyed playing checkers, traveling, and eating spaghetti.
A man of a deep and abiding faith, Vohu was raised in the St. John United Holy Church in New Castle. He later became a faithful member of the Evangel Assembly of God which was later renamed Metro Assembly of God. As humble servant leader, he held many roles within the ministry. Vohu was a deacon, member of the security task force, board member and former president of the Men’s Ministry. In addition, he took on the responsibility of maintaining the church’s interior as its janitor. His commitment to the church was unwavering, and he remained a devoted member until his health prevented him from attending.
Vohu’s life was filled with love and laughter, and he had an incredible knack for making those around him feel special and valued. His stories, often interwoven with humor and timeless lessons, will echo in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy is one of love, strength, and a deep appreciation for family.
Vohu's legacy is preserved in the fond memories of his immediate family, which includes his children: Vurnise Lynn Johnson-Shaw (Eric Hayden) of Youngstown, Calvin (Lori) Harrison of Columbus, Charles Frazier of Youngstown, and Teresa Lynn (Nate) Ross of Youngstown. His legacy will be sustained by his five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, each who will greatly miss him but will hold fast to the memories created. Vohu also leaves an extensive network of relatives and friends who treasured times shared. The enduring depth of relationships reflects the indelible impact of his life on those around him.
When Vohu’s faith became sight, upon entering eternity he was reunited with his parents, his bride of more than forty years, Rev. Fannie Johnson; sons Victor Lee Johnson, Vaughn Eric Johnson, and George Allen Miller, Jr. and his siblings C.J. Johnson, V.J. Johnson, Juanita Johnson, Lillian Gaither, Frank Johnson, Willie Louise Barker, Theodosia Terry, and Harold Johnson.
As we reflect on Vohu's life, we remember his unwavering spirit, the warmth of his smile, and the love he gave so freely. The family wishes to honor Vohu’s memory with a 9:00am public viewing on Saturday February15, 2025 in the chapel of the J E Washington Funeral Home, 2234 Glenwood Ave., in Youngstown. The Celebration of Life services will begin at 10:00 am.
Following the committal ceremony, Vohu will be laid to rest at the Belmont Park Cemetery in Liberty Township. Though he has departed from this world, his memory will forever remain a guiding light in our hearts.
