Obituary For Lurline McCowin

The Homegoing Celebration for Mother Lurline Garrett McCowin will commence Saturday, 11:00am at St. Violet Baptist Church with Pastor Richard E. McCowin serving as eulogist. Mother McCowin will be laid in thine earthly bed at Kilgore Memorial Gardens. Services have been entrusted to John R. Harmon Undertaking Co.

On Thursday morning, August 18, 2022, Mother Lurline Garrett McCowin, departed this life and entered eternal rest at her home surrounded by family at 95 years of age. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, brother, RC Garrett and sister, Emma Suell.

Mother Lurline was a devoted woman of God who loved the Lord and her family. She set examples for her children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and great- great grandchildren that will guide them all their lives. Besides raising her family, she was a great caregiver and babysitter for many young families in the community.

Mother Lurline was the first of four children born to the late Rev. Reecie and Mother Minnie Lee Garrett on October 10, 1926 in Center, Texas. She was married to her lifelong partner, the late Lamar McCowin for 74 years and this union produced seven children: Iva Nell (McCowin) Chumbley, Pastor Richard E. McCowin, Willie L. McCowin, Louis E. McCowin (Mary Helen), Jerry W. McCowin (Jacqueline) all of Tyler, Texas, Shirley A. (McCowin) Woods (Daryl) of Dallas, Texas and Deborah F. McCowin of Tyler, Texas.

Mother Lurline loved God, her church family, and serving others. She was humble, gentle, and a powerful prayer warrior—only God knows what a wonderful and eternal impact the many years of faithful praying has left on her family, friends, and whomever else she came in contact with during her lifetime.

Mother was a lifelong member committed and dedicated to Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ while serving in numerous capacities: Teacher of ASOW, Bible Study, YPE Band, District and State Secretary, Messenger of the Gospel as County Mother of Dallas and Smith Counties, and State Mother for Texas. She loved praising God in song. Some of her favorites include: “I Never Shall forget what you’ve done for me”, “I Am What God Says I Am”, “It’s a Dark Cloud Rising”, “If I labor in the Vineyard God is going to Give Me a Crown.”

She is survived by her seven children; twenty grandchildren; twenty-nine great- grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; sister, Pauline Johnson Center, Texas, brothers- in- law; Cal McCowin (Bobbie) and S.A. McCowin, sisters- in- law, Shepherd Reather McCowin and Fannie Turner; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends that knew her. Special recognition to her extended family; six brothers and five sisters of the Spark family.
