( November 25, 1928 – July 3, 2025 )
TYLER — Thomas Edward “Snag” Spigner, a lifelong resident of Tyler, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on July 3, 2025, at the age of 96.
Born November 25, 1928, in Pickton, Texas (Hopkins County), Thomas was the son of the late Earlin Spigner and Ophelia McClure Spigner. He was born blind and tongue-tied, but by God’s grace, his vision was restored at a young age—an early testament to the faith and strength that would define his life. He attended T.J. Austin Elementary/Junior High and graduated from Emmett J. Scott High School, where he was well known for his athletic talent, especially in football.
Thomas led a life marked by hard work, commitment, and devotion to his family and community. He worked with various contracting companies before establishing his own successful contracting business, which he operated for more than 40 years. Blessed with a unique ability to design without blueprints, he turned vision into reality with his hands and heart. Even after retiring, he continued to serve his community for over 15 years as a dedicated school crossing guard with the City of Tyler.
A faithful member of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church since the age of four, Thomas served dutifully as an usher and was honored as the church’s oldest and most faithful member.
He was united in marriage to the late Johnnie Houston Spigner, with whom he shared over 50 years of love and partnership. Together, they built a large and loving family. He is survived by his children: Walter McCauley (LaZenda), Retha Sanders (Larry), Thomasina Pettigrew (late Larry Sr.), Chere' Mumphrey (late Anthony Sr.), Marcus Spigner (Tonya), John Spigner, David Spigner (Alice), Walter Spigner (Karen), Angela Geter, and Tamela Young (Aran). He also leaves behind 27 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and 34 great-great-grandchildren who will continue to honor his legacy.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Johnnie Houston Spigner; daughter, Shelia Renee Stubblefield; great-grandchildren Keen Spigner, Lil Jaylen Jenkins and Lil Ophelia Spigner; and siblings Earlin “Matthew” Spigner, Sybil Jones, Farrell Spigner, James (JR) Spigner, and Charles Hubbard Spigner.
Affectionately known as “Snag,” He will be remembered for his generous heart and steady presence. He was a no-nonsense father figure with an iron will, known for his strict discipline and stubborn nature. He didn’t shy away from being tough—but it was always out of love. His firm hand and strong beliefs shaped generations, leaving behind a family rooted in respect, resilience, and integrity.
In his younger days, he enjoyed coon hunting and, in later years, became a master domino player—earning the title of “Domino King.” As the proud patriarch of his family, he was a man of deep faith, humility, and perseverance.
His life and legacy will forever be cherished by all who had the blessing of knowing him.
Public viewing will be Friday, July 11, 2025 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
