I was sorry to hear about the passing of Sister Barbara Wiggins, and will keep the family in my thoughts and Prayers. I will always remember her as a Woman of Excellence, always dressed for Success! She had a lot of wisdom and did not mind sharing what she knew. Over the years we had many telephone conversations and they were all meaningful. They always ended with Food For thought. She sent birthday cards to every church member on their birthday. What a 💜 and cared for her husband as long as she could. Fly high Sister Barbara Wiggins. You touched many lives! I was one of them.

Barbara Wiggins was a kind, thoughtful, smart woman and a wonderful teacher to generations of students. I worked with her for seven years at Cleveland Elementary School, and even after I left, I would send her congratulatory messages each year when standardized tests scores were published for all of the Spartanburg County Schools. Her test scores were always exemplary. She was able to motivate her students to do their best. Even students with whom she had to be firm loved her because they knew she loved them.

My condolences to the family. Mrs Wiggins was my favorite third grade teacher at Cleveland she was a very sweet lady. She will truly be missed.

I am sad to hear the news that my kindergarten teacher has passed away. I had saw Mrs. Wiggins many years ago at Walmart, and it was good to see her again. She looked so young! I had to ask her what her secret was to staying so young. She didn't tell me the secret. She just smiled and continued talking to me. I will always remember that moment.

Barbara Wiggins was one of the most effective teachers I've ever met. Students, as well as her colleagues loved her. Well dressed, beautiful, and charming were three of her attributes. And I dare not forget that she had one of the most beautiful soprano voices. Barbara will be missed but she planted fields and fields of knowledge into her students. See you afterwhile, Barbara.

I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Wiggins in the early 2000s at Cleveland Academy. She was truly one of the best teachers. She always willing to offer advice to me as a young educator, encourage others, and go the extra mile to make sure her students understood what she was teaching. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside her. My heartfelt condolences and prayers are with her family, friends, former students, and everyone whose life she touched. I met Barbara when we were eighth grade students at Carver High School and have been friends ever since. She had a melodious voice and graced our school chorus, the Carverettes, with it and many choirs thereafter. She never hesitated to give me her opinion on a matter whether I asked for it or not. A loving, caring person who gave unselfishly of herself to any project she chose to be involved in. Shall never forget your faithfulness.

I was a young, energetic teacher, fresh out of college, and I was convinced I had created the next great teaching strategy. 😂 I had designed this wonderful place-value game that my students absolutely LOVED. I was proud of myself, and naturally, I had to share it with anyone who would listen.

One of the people I shared it with was the legendary veteran educator, Barbara Wiggins.

She looked at my game with enthusiasm—or at least what I thought was enthusiasm. 😂 But I could tell she wasn't exactly impressed.

Then she looked at me and asked:

"But does it transfer?"

I was confused.

"Ma'am?"

She said, "Baby, does it transfer? They can play the game, but do they understand the concept of place value? Can they demonstrate that understanding outside of the game?"

In my young-teacher mind, I thought:

"Oh, she's hating on me." 😂

Of course, I figured she was just giving the new kid on the block a hard time.

But then I did something every educator should be willing to do:

I assessed my students.

And guess what?

THEY ALL FAILED.

Yep.

She was right.

The game was fun. The students loved it. But the learning didn't transfer.

That moment humbled me.

I went back to Ms. Wiggins and told her, "You were right. Can you help me?"

And she did.

She shared what she knew, what she had learned, and what she had developed over years of experience.

That lesson has stayed with me ever since:

Engagement is important. But engagement without transfer isn't learning.

Sometimes the best educators are the ones who are willing to lovingly challenge what we think is working—and then help us become better.

Ms. Barbara Wiggins was a rare bird.

I am grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from her, be corrected by her, and experience her generosity.

She will be deeply missed. ❤️

And every time I ask myself, "But does it transfer?" I'll think of her.

In the early 2000s, I had the privilege of having Barbara Wiggins on my staff as a third-grade teacher at Cleveland Elementary School. She was a dedicated, organized, and caring educator who held every student to a high standard, encouraging each one to work hard and reach their full potential. Mrs. Wiggins was deeply respected among her peers for her professionalism and her heart for teaching.

Beyond the classroom, she lived out that same devotion — active in her church and a faithful caregiver to members of her family. Her warm smile and strong, steady demeanor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
