On June 1, 1950, Charles Albert Davis, Sr., was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina to the late Troy Davis, and Mary Davis, who preceded him in death. Charles loved people and loved spending time with those closest to him discussing all types of things from sports to finances. Charles will always be remembered for his willingness to serve and do for others. In case you ever wondered what his love language was, it was definitely acts of service.
Charles loved to remind everyone of the education he was so proud of having graduated high school, from Carver Senior High School, Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1968. He attended Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, from 1968-1972. He began his professional career as a teacher/coach at Tanglewood Middle School in Greenville, South Carolina. After a brief stint there, he spent the bulk of his career at Carolina High School, in Greenville, South Carolina. He held numerous roles at Carolina High and over the span of his career, positively impacted thousands of lives. Students, players, and co-workers share fond memories of Charles and tell stories reinforcing the impact he had not only to the school, but also the broader community. While he held other roles at other schools, the time spent at Carolina High School, molded who he was, the principles that were most important to him and was time held dear to his heart.
The definition of retirement for Charles read differently than most. While he was no longer formally a coach, or a teacher, he shifted his focus to other means of service. Most of his days started before sun rise. He was often known to be relied on to give people rides back and forth to work (for a small fee of course), mowing lawns and doing any odd job he could get his hands on to keep him occupied. He was often seen on his lawn mower, heading down Cannons Campground Road on his way to mow the church lawn.
Charles was predeceased in death by his loving wife, Joyce Davis. He was the last surviving sibling of four, as his sisters, Cynthia, Sharon, and Jeannette, also pre-deceased him. Charles leaves behind three children, Sonya, Charles II (Asmirh) and Jarvis (Adriane). Additionally, Charles leaves behind five grandchildren, Jaylin, Aubrey, Jarvia, Sterling, and Charles III. And finally, he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Charles lived his life, in the way he deemed most appropriate for him. He would always say, you may not agree with it, you may not like it, but I am who I am. We all appreciate the gifts Charles left behind and the consistent manner in which he did it. Up until his last breath, he did it his way!

Keep looking towards the hill, from which thy help come from, thy help come from the Lord. We may be endured for a night, but joy comes in the morning light. I ask God to be with you during the days, weeks, and months as they come and go. May the Lord give you the strength to get through this challenging time and continue to lean on each other for comfort and encouragement. I am so glad the Lord allowed my path to cross the Davis family at New Prospect AME Zion Church. It was with great joy I watched your family worship and pray together as a family should do throughout the years. Also, the hard work, dedication, agape love your family poured out to the members and to the community. Charles will be greatly missed in the church and in the community. He always had a smile on his face and greeted everyone as a friend. May the Lord continue to bless each one of you in a mighty way.
