Deacon Charles Inlo Moultrie

Deacon Charles Inlo Moultrie was born September 15, 1933 in Spartanburg County, SC. He was the third of seven children of the late Atties Lee Moultrie and Mary Lee Peake Moultrie. He was a graduate of Mary H. Wright High School. As a child, he was baptized and at the Metropolitan AME Zion Church and nurtured in the faith at Arch AME Zion Church.

After graduation, he served in the United States Army and later retired from the Pentagon with over 30 years of service and achieved numerous awards.

Deacon Moultrie was a humble and holy man who loved his queenly wife, Deaconess Daisy Mae Philo Moultrie, their families, friends and foes. They were ordained and consecrated as servant leaders at the Canaan Baptist Church in our nation’s capital where they served with both devotion and distinction. The Moultries were friends and loyal supporters to late pastor, Dr. & Mrs. Cornelius C. Carter, Jr., as well as his current pastoral team, Dr. & Mrs. Marcell D. Busch at Majority Baptist Church in his hometown. They served as the spiritual parents and grandparents for Dr. Leo & Mrs. Cathy Whitaker and their sons.

Affectionately called “Charlie” most notably was a devoted, faithful, and loyal member of Majority Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Trustee, a member of the Compassion In Action, a leader in the Audio Visual Ministry and sang in the Male Chorus. He was faithful in serving the widows, those in need and visiting the sick and shut-in. His attendance and participation in Church School, Bible Study and evening services in the community was impeccable. Every time the doors of the church were opened for ministry he was there with a wide smile on his face!

He was preceded in death by six siblings and their spouses - Arties Lee Moultrie (Helen), Fred Moultrie (Nina), James Moultrie, Floyd Moultrie and Marian M. Gilree.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving, faithful and precious wife, Daisy Moultrie; a dear sister, Julia Moultrie Peak; Loving In-laws, Dr. Rodwell & Mrs. Elva Buckley; a devoted niece, Jacqueline B. Rollins (Christopher); dutiful nephews, Alfred O. Buckley (Helen), and Bernard Gilree; and a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, close friends and amazingly supportive neighbors. We will all remember his life and love while saluting his legacy.

Mr. Moultrie will lie in state on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, SC.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at 12:00 noon at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC. Dr. Marcell D. Bush will officiate.
