David J. Downing, Jr.
David Joseph Downing, Jr., affectionately known as โPeterโ โScooterโ, slipped away to be with the lord, on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at 6:13 PM. He was born to the late David Joseph Downing, Sr. and Vermell Downing in Trenton, New Jersey, on February 20, 1940.
David was united in marriage to Helen Jeter-Downing for 31 years, along with his three children, Valo, David III and Aronya. He was a devoted father, pop-pop, brother, uncle and a special friend to many.
Accepting Christ at an early age, he was baptized at Union Baptist Church, Trenton, NJ. In his later years, he joined and attended Jerusalem Baptist Church, Trenton, NJ, under the leadership of the Rev.,Dr. T.L. Steele.
David attended the Trenton Public School System, and graduated from Trenton Central High School. He served in the US Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1965. He was proprietor of Joe-Dan Photo Engraving and also a Master Paper Hanger, servicing many in the Greater Trenton area.
Later he became employed by General Motors, Fisher Guide where he worked for 20 years, before retiring in 1993. After retiring, he then moved to Iselin, NJ, where he became employed by Sambee Trading Company, Edison, NJ.
Upon retiring again, with his wife they relocated to Boiling Springs, SC. This is where they joined Holden Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and served until he became ill.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Helen, two sons, Valo M. Downing, Indianapolis, IN, David J. Downing, III (Anita), Newnan, GA and one daughter, Aronya Downing-Figueroa (Kenneth), Hamilton, NJ, his siblings, Ora V. Brown (Collis), Pemberton, NJ, Daniel Downing (Theresa), Ewing, NJ, Sharlene Downing, Trenton, NJ, Dorsey Downing, Baton Rouge, LA and Dr. Pamela Downing-Hosten, Fontana, CA., nine grandchildren, Val-Toinette, Krystal, Anicka, Alexis, David, Tai-lynn, Aaron, Zion and Kamren, three great grandchildren, two aunts, Lillian Givens, Lavenia Gasque, two godchildren, Ursula Pollard, and Ashlee Love, an adoring mother-in-law, Sertina M. Jeter, four sister-in-laws, Diane (Ed) Bates, Merita and Bridgette Jeter, Spartanburg, SC, Caretha Jeter, Trenton, NJ, brother-in-law, Eddie Jeter, Pacolet, SC, special cousins, Jacqueline Perry, Ewing, NJ and Alphonso Downing, Valencia, CA, and a multitude of nieces, nephews.
A celebration of the Life of David J. Downing, Jr. will be held Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at 1:00 p. m. at Holden Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 2260 Old Furnace Rd., Boiling Springs, SC.
