The Life and Legacy of Deaconess Daisy May Vidora Philo Moultrie
The angels escorted Deaconess Daisy May Vidora Philo Moultrie to her heavenly home on Sunday, August 3, 2025. Born in Swetes, Antigua on May 30, 1940, she was the daughter of Charlotte C. James and Bradford R. Philo. Baby Daisy was dedicated to the LORD and baptized at the Pilgrim Holiness Church on July 7, 1940. She was a gifted student in Antigua and continued her training and education pursuing a career in nursing in the States.
Sister Daisy was the wife of the late Reverend Anton Blyden and shared as the First Lady of the Church of God of Prophecy in Christiansted, Virgin Islands until his death. Daisy relocated to the District of Columbia/Maryland area. There she united with Canaan Baptist Church where she met and married Charles Inlo Moultrie on Friday, October 31, 1980. She became a naturalized United States of America citizen soon thereafter. They built a wonderful and wholesome marriage and home in Washington, DC and later in Riverdale, Maryland. Everyone at Canaan LOVED and ADMIRED the Moultries!
Nurse Daisy shared her medical knowledge and compassionate care with persons in the hospital, but she enjoyed working in the homes of her patients giving stellar care in DC, Maryland, and as well in Spartanburg, SC. She was so devoted to the nursing profession that her services were always in high demand—families eagerly waited for her availability, trusting her to care for their loved ones with compassion and excellence.
Mr. and Mrs. Moultrie were ordained and consecrated as servant leaders at the Canaan Baptist Church in the nation’s capital where they served with both devotion and distinction. They were friends and loyal supporters to their late Pastor and First Lady, Dr. and Mrs. Cornelius C. Carter, Jr. for over 25 years. There she enjoyed working alongside various ministries to include Pastor’s Aide, Missionaries, and Sunday School. It was there, they became spiritual parents and grandparents to Dr. and Mrs. Leo and Cathy Whitaker and sons.
In 2005, the Moultries relocated to Spartanburg, SC to join her husband’s family and united with Majority Baptist Church. Together, they faithfully served as a Deacon and Deaconess. Just as at Canaan, they were devoted and loyal supporters of their Pastor and family, Dr. and Mrs. Marcell Bush. Deaconess Moultrie enjoyed the Pastor’s Aide, Missionary, and Compassion in Action ministries. She diligently served the widows, those in need and visiting the sick and shut-in. Deaconess Moultrie was a queenly and spiritual mother of the Christian church. She was always ready to give praises to GOD and pray with an anointing and a spirit of gratitude. She and her husband would graciously set the fashion standard for Sunday morningworship. The neighbors in Spartanburg would be on the lookout for their “Sunday Best!” Deacon and Deaconess Moultrie never disappointed them and were often dressed in matching colors!
Deaconess Daisy preceded in death by two brothers, William and Reuben Philo, and her younger sister, Linda Philo and several in-laws and their spouses - Arties Lee Moultrie (Helen), Fred Moultrie (Nina), James Moultrie, Floyd Moultrie and Marian M. Gilree.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving Godchildren/spiritual children, Dr. Leo and Cathy Whitaker and their sons, a cherished sister and brother in law, Dr. Rodwell and Elva Buckley; a devoted niece, Jacqueline B. Rollins (Christopher); dutiful nephew, Alfred O. Buckley (Helen); a sister in law, Julia Moultrie Peak; a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, close friends and amazingly supportive neighbors. We will all fondly remember her life and love while saluting her legacy.
We are saddened to learn of Mrs. Moultrie passing. We have fond memories of her when we were members of Majority Baptist Church. Donnie & Jean Blackley
