Derek Lynn Dawkins
Spartanburg, SC- Derek Lynn Dawkins, 52, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 21, 2020. Mr. Dawkins was the son of Henry Donald Dawkins and Georgia Ellis Bewayo.
Derek graduated from Gaffney High School. He also earned a paralegal degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a bachelor of science degree in computer engineering from the City University of New York, and a masters of science degree in business administration from Georgia College and State University. He also attended North Carolina A&T State University.
Mr. Dawkins pledged membership in the New York Chapter of The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He took much pride in belonging to service organizations and participating in community activities. One of Derek's most cherished duties was taking care of family members who needed his help.
He was employed with International Business Machines for over fifteen years. Then, he worked as an IT Project Manager for the City of Atlanta.
Left to cherish fond and loving memories are his mother, Georgia E. Bewayo of White Plains, MD; his brother, Steven Todd Dawkins (Rashida) of Lizella, GA; special aunt, Patricia A. Ellis of Spartanburg, SC; step aunt, Annie Jolly of Gaffney, SC; aunts, Nancy Dawkins of Cowpens, SC and Virginia Dawkins of Gaffney, SC; uncles, Lionel Milton and Bernard Dawkins of Gaffney, SC; cousins, Tara Ellis of Jamaica, NY, Talia Davis of Valley Stream, NY, Brittany Ellis Reams (David) of Gaffney, SC, Brian M. Ellis (Kim), Brianna Ellis, and Brian M. Ellis, Jr. all of Spartanburg, SC; and godmother, LaVetta Sherrill of Gaffney, SC; as well as a host of other family and friends.
A Celebration of the Life of Derek Lynn Dawkins will be held graveside on Friday, June 26, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Lincoln Memorial Gardens, 2256 Cannons Campground Road, Drayton, SC. Burial will also be held at Lincoln Memorial Gardens.
Wow, I am really saddened and shocked to hear this! I worked with Derek back at IBM Melville, and he was not only a great colleague and mentor, but a really good friend. He had a great heart, and was a very loving person. Derek, may you rest in peace man, and I'm really glad I had the opportunity to know you.
