Obituary For Dr. David Scott

ROCK HILL, SC-- Dr. David L. Scott died Monday, December 19, 2011, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC. Born in Washington, DC to the late Isabel and Harry Scott, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Scott. Dr. Scott was educated in the Washington, DC school system. He enlisted into the Air Force and fought in the Korean War. He continued his education after he left the military at D.C. Teachers' College and became a teacher in Washington.His calling into the ministry brought changes in his life. He began serving as Junior Pastor at Galbraith AME Zion Church, Washington, DC and remained there until he was transferred to South Carolina to become pastor at St. Matthew's AME Zion Church, Rock Hill, SC, where he was instrumental in building a new edifice. Dr. Scott was also an educator in the Rock Hill School System, and furthered his education at Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC. He was a minister who was involved in the Civil Rights Movement and helped to desegregate establishments on King Street in Charleston, SC.Being a minister of the Methodist faith; he had an itinerate ministry. Therefore, he was transferred to Camden, SC and then to Spartanburg, SC.Dr. Scott was a minister who has received many awards from all walks of life. On the General Level of the AME Zion Church he served as a delegate to the General Conference, Episcopal Committee and Subcommittee, Connectional Budget Board, and Church Extension Board.Dr. Scott was assigned by the Bishop, to become the pastor of Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Spartanburg, SC, where he was a successful pastor for seven years. After his seven year tenure at Metropolitan the congregation voted to move to a new site. Thirty-three years ago, Arch Street AME Zion Church was founded under the leadership of Dr. David L. Scott. He served as pastor of Arch Street AME Zion Church for 28 years and also served as Presiding Elder of the Spartanburg District for 20 years. Dr. Scott was an unassuming quiet pastor who done much for the community and city of Spartanburg. He was also employed by Spartanburg School District Seven and worked at McCracken Junior High School.His last mission in the city of Spartanburg was to open The Happy Home Adult Daycare Center at Arch Street AME Zion Church where he was the director. This facility served the mentally and physically challenged young adults and the elderly of the community. Dr. Scott retired from pastoring at Arch Street AME Zion Church in 2006, after spending 35 years of pastoring in the city of Spartanburg.J. W. WoodwardFuneral Home
