Edna Bell Boyd was born on January 18th, 1938 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to Willie Edward Boyd and Mary Bellonia Lyles. Edna was the second of four children and was known for her calming spirit and unwavering optimism in the face of adversity. She consistently opened her home and extended kindness to everyone, a gentle soul with a nurturing gift. Edna displayed love and compassion to all she encountered, always without hesitation. She found joy in gardening, sewing, cooking with love, playing music, faithfully attending church, but her greatest pleasure came from hosting family gatherings. Being surrounded by family filled her heart with warmth and laughter, bringing her endless joy.
Edna had a deep passion for education, always eager to learn and shared her knowledge whenever she could. She attended Simms Chapel Elementary School, Cummings Street Middle School, and graduated from Carver High School. Later, she enrolled in home health aide courses at York College with dreams and aspirations of one day becoming a registered nurse.
Spartanburg, South Carolina, holds special significance for the Stroble family. It was here that Edna resided with her father Willie and her amazing Step-Mother Ardella Simms. They created a beautiful life for Edna however one of the most precious, yet everlasting moments was meeting the late Edward Stroble, beginning a beautiful union that led to 40+ years of marriage and seven children. The couple later relocated to New York City, where Edna pursued a career at Mays Department Store. Her proudest achievement was her promotion to manager, a role she held with great pride.
As a provider, once Edna began to face health challenges, Edward insisted that she focus on her health and family. She always put her family first and prided herself on being a mom and caregiver. Mothers hold a unique and vital role in their children's lives, and Edna embodied that beautifully. Her distinct approach to discipline, her commitment to teaching, and above all, her boundless love for her children and grandchildren stand as a true testament to what it means to be a phenomenal woman.
“A mother’s love is the ultimate sacrifice, first she gives everything she has for her children. A mother’s sacrifice is never ending, but her love is never-fading. A mother’s sacrifice is not just in what she gives up, but also in what she silently endures for her children.” ~unknown
