Florence Sims Wofford Mayes was born to the late Charlie and Hattie Mae (McClain) Sims on June 20, 1947, in Spartanburg, SC. Florence graduated from Carver High School in Spartanburg in 1965. Florence’s career path was comprised of various roles including positions at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, currently known as Spartanburg Medical Center, 7Eleven, Spartanburg County Courthouse and the Social Security Administration Office in Charlotte, NC. Prior to her illness, Florence enjoyed having a “good time”. She loved to cook, dance and entertain. She often hosted family & friends for holiday gatherings and took advantage of any reason to entertain at her home. She took immense pleasure in beautifying her surroundings. She possessed a “green thumb” and loved gardening, resulting in accenting her home, inside and outside, with beautiful plants and flowers. She also liked reading and watching television, especially the Lifetime channel. However, her greatest passion was shopping with the emphasis on handbags and shoes. She was preceded in death by: her siblings, Charlie Sims, Joe Samuel Sims, Joe Louis Sims, Brownie Mae Saxon, and Willie Mae Walker. After several hospital visits, due to her declining health, Florence returned home and it was there that she departed this life, April 26, 2025. She leaves to mourn: her devoted and caring husband, Wayne Mayes; stepson, Anthony Mayes, Sr.; step grandchildren, Kiara, Anthony Jr., and Chloe Mayes; step great grandson, Zai’re Mayes; her loving siblings, Doretha White, Jessie Kiensler, Mae Sue Gory, Dupre Sims, Michael Sims (Claudia), Willie Charles Sims; a doting niece, Roberta McKelvin; sisters-in-law, Mary Watkins, Denise Harris, Beverly Mayes, Carol Jeter; a brother-in-law, William T. Mayes; cherished friends, Dorothy “Dot” Jones, William C. “Wild Bill” Tate; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. All of whom she loved dearly.
