Smiley, you ARE Mr State. Rest well brother.MRP9
To the family, You have our deepest sympathy. Glover Smiley was a kind and caring person. He was a good friend of my children's father and he was there for us during his illness and his passing. He visited called, took him to appointments, always supportive and cheerful. We loved him. May you be comforted in knowing that he was loved and admired by so many others. He will be sorely missed. They say if you want something accomplished get a busy person and that is what he was! He was so dedicated to West Virginia State University and making sure that everything was perfected. He truly was a One Man's Show with that AGAPE LOVE that God wants us all to have for our fellowman. Little did I realize that one person could have so much energy and accomplish what he did in all aspects of his life. I am proud to say that I am a recipient of 110% Glover Smiley Award set up in his name for those who sought to do a yeoman job on behalf of our alumni association. He was truly a child God and was born for such time as this. He had work to be done during his brief time on this earth. I do believe that he is one servant who will hear the words, "well one my good and faithful servant". Minister Elinor Mann Agee, Class '62

To the family of Coach Smiley, my family and I send our heartfelt condolences to you. Before I was employed at Spartanburg High, my children and I's alma mater, I met Smiley when I worked at DMTC while recruiting students. Later, when my children started track in middle school, they always talked about him. Eventually, I worked at SHS, and was not only I his parent, but also a coworker. Smiley was a father to all the kids on the team. My children, especially Dwight Jr., had a special bond with Smiley. I enjoyed talking, laughing, hearing stories about his family and childhood, and his love for West Virginia State. He knew everybody and had a story to tell about that person. I last saw him in May or June when he dropped off hoodies he had made in memory of Dwight, Jr. Smiley was a given and caring person. I was glad that he spoke at Dee's funeral last year, and he was a shoulder for Alexis and Arin to lean on. It's been difficult for me and my family because Smiley knew all the good times, which include the birth of my grandchildren, and the downs. But, he never said a negative thing, and always thought about them. My husband and I will forever thank Smiley for being an awesome school counselor and coach to our children. Smiley made track and field fun for them and their track mates. May you rest in peace Smiley. You did what the Father intended for you to do, and it's up to the rest of us to make this world a little better every day.
I am a former employee of Carver jr. High--retired now. But still a supporter of the Spartan High Vikings. I would like to extend my deepest sympathy for your loss. Mr. Smiley was well loved and respected and I will pray for the family at his homegoing service and afterwards. B. Joyce Washington
