Obituary For James M. Coleman Jr.
James “Junior” Marion Coleman, 64, a devoted son and brother, departed this life on September 21, 2026. He was a native of Spartanburg County; the beloved son of Mrs. Shirley Steen Coleman and the late Mr. James Marion Coleman, Sr.
In reflection, James exemplified admirable characteristics of kindness, patience, integrity, and empathy towards others. Early in life, he attended Spartanburg School District Seven schools and graduated from SHS in the Class of 1980. Afterwards, he received a degree in computer technology. He developed and utilized his technology skills to become a leader in the business sector.
As a long-time employee of Milliken and Company, he served in various leadership roles and positions. His great work ethic and determination to excel prepared him for several roles throughout the company. Initially, in 1985, he served as a Micro Data Processor in IS which prepared him for the position of Cost Accounting Analyst in 1989. Afterwards, in 1992-2005, he moved into Corporate Supply Chain roles within the textile division. In 2005-2023, he joined the Customer Service Department. In this department, he served as CS Coordinator before assuming the role of CS Coordinator Senior. Ultimately, he completed his career as a CS Coordinator Lead for Military business.
Upon his retirement in 2023, he immersed himself in playing golf; his enthusiasm led him to encourage others to join and learn the techniques of mastering the greens. As a testimony to his faith, he lived an inspirational and peaceful life. His magnetic smile and caring spirit will be missed, yet his enduring love will be remembered.
He is survived by his treasured mother, Mrs. Shirley Steen Coleman; his loving sister, Darlene Coleman Dickson (Isaac); nephew, Dion Antwan Dickson; great-nephew, Auden Dickson; aunt, Mary C. Gory. Additional family includes Leonard and Karla Starks, Candace Starks, Jordan Starks, Carolynne Perry, Ava Perry, and a host of other family and close friends.
Much gratitude and appreciation are extended to Tamala “Tam” Pilgrim for her love and unwavering support to James and the family.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 12:00 noon at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, SC. Burial will follow in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens. Livestream will be available.

When you've known someone for the majority of your life, it's hard to imagine a world without them. I remember going with my Aunt Vera and Ms Shirley to Jr's ballgames when we were in elementary school. Sometimes, the other ladies from the social club would bring their children. Growing up, he went to SHS, and I went to DHS, but we remained in touch over the years until I moved away. My heart hurts for you all. I pray that God gives you strength as you press forward in the days to come. May the many wonderful memories you have with Jr sustain and comfort you forever . Jackie Lyles Kersey
