Brother Joseph P. DeHart, affectionately known as “Cornbread,” was born on August 20, 1950, in Union, South Carolina, to the late Mr. Joe Bailey DeHart and Mrs. Julia S. DeHart. He peacefully departed this life leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication.
Joseph was educated in the public schools of Union County, South Carolina, and Houston,Texas. He graduated from Ross Sterling High School in Houston, Texas. He was employed for twenty-five years at Chock Full O’ Nuts in Brooklyn, New York. After retiring, he returned home to Jonesville, South Carolina, where he continued his commitment to service by working with the Union County School System at Jonesville Elementary/Middle School for twelve years before retiring. It was there that students affectionately gave him the nickname “Cornbread,” aname that stayed with him throughout the latter portion of his life. He later returned to the Union County School System for a second period of service before retiring once again. Joseph also served as an assistant at the Jonesville Area Senior Citizens Center.
Joseph was a faithful member of Foster Chapel Baptist Church in Jonesville, South Carolina, where he sang in the All-Male Chorus. He was deeply involved in his community and fraternal organizations. He was a member of Foster Chapel, Enterprise Lodge #460; Hiram Chapter #2, Royal Arch Masons, P.H.A.; Lady Esther Chapter #353, O.E.S.; Tamin Temple #155 AEAONMS Shriners; and the Union County Brothers in Black.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved daughter, Cheryl (Antwon), his cherished grandson, James “LJ” Earhart; one sister, Edith M. Foster of Jonesville, South Carolina; one brother, George Wayne DeHart of Houston, Texas; three nieces, Marie Brown (Steve), Kinshasa Foster of Columbia, South Carolina, and Ta-ta DeHart of Houston, Texas; along with a host of grandnieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.
Joseph lived life to the fullest—he worked hard, played hard, and loved hard. His warmth, dedication, and spirited personality will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him
