Obituary For Lonnie Holman
Lonnie Clayman Holman Sr. was born on June 25, 1937, in Forsyth County, North Carolina. Affectionately known as “L.C.” by his family, he was the second born of eight children to the late Mr. Baxter Dennis Holman and Mrs. Vivian Ellis Holman. He was the husband of Mrs. Romesena Huggins Holman.
Lonnie received his early education in the public schools of Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he proudly drove a school bus and graduated from Carver High School in the class of 1956. He went on to attend South Carolina State University in
Orangeburg, South Carolina where he played football as a Center on the Offensive Line. He was also a participant in the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps.
As a student, Lonnie received his Bachelor of Science degree from South Carolina State University in 1960. He also earned his Master of Science degree from North Carolina A &T State University, Greensboro, North Carolina. His Educational Specialist degree was procured from Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina. Lonnie was an avid lover and participant of sports in high school and in college. He competed in many sports activities, but his first love was football.
At an early age, Lonnie became an active member of Mount Sinai AME Zion Church, Advance, North Carolina. While residing in Greenville, South Carolina he became a member of Israel CME Church, where he served as a Trustee and a member of the Adult Choir. After relocating his family to Spartanburg, South Carolina Lonnie was a member of Bunton CME Church where he served faithfully on the Adult Choir, Steward Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee Board and Trustee Emeritus.

Mr. Holman’s civic and social involvement included Spartanburg Progressive Men’s Club, South Spartanburg Sertoma Club, Upper South Carolina Guidance Association, National Vocational Guidance Association, American Personnel and Guidance Association, National Education Association, and South Carolina State Alumni. Additional involvements include, Little League Football Coach, Boy Scout Troup Leader, Big Brother/ Big Sister of Spartanburg, Miss Black Spartanburg Scholarship Pageant, and the local NAACP. Lonnie was a Jack and Jill of America, Inc. father, a Connecting Link through his wife’s membership with The Spartanburg (SC) Chapter of the Links, Inc., and a member of the Diamonnaires Bridge Club. Mr. Holman served as a Constable with the S.C. Sheriff’s Department.
Lonnie was initiated into the Epsilon Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and was awarded his 45year Pin and Plaque in February. He found a home with men who developed leaders and promoted brotherhood. He served on many committees, was
Chapter President, Omega Man of the Year 1981, and was elected Six Districted Representive, 1993-1995. He was proud of his contribution in establishing the Omega Boy’s Leadership Camp and the Omega Raiders Little League Football.
In addition to his parents, Lonnie is preceded in death by four brothers, Baxter Dennis Holman, Jr, Melvin Holman, Franklin Holman, and Jimmy Holman. Two sisters, Maxine Holman Mc Millian, Shirley Holman Allen, two dear brothers- in-law, Elbert McMillian and Smitty Allen.
Left to cherish his fond and loving memories are his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Romesena Huggins Holman, his sons Lonnie Clayman Holman III of Concord, NC and David Curtis Holman of Upper Marlboro, MD; Three grandchildren, Lia Elizabeth Holman, David C. Holman II, and Kenyatta Soleil Holman. One sister, Carolyn Kaye Cunningham of Winston-Salem, NC: two sisters-in-law, Adranna Grant of Rockville and Ernestine Holman of Clemmons, NC, two daughters-in-love, Lisa Wilson- Holman, and Lasonji Ann Holman, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, additional family members and friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. at Majority Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, SC. Livestream will be available via Facebook on the TEEFERGUSONREPORT.

What a life of service to others! I was a student at Daniel Morgan Vocational School when he was an Administrator there. I have never met a kinder, more caring individual as Mr. Holman. Any of us who were lucky enough to know him are the better for his presence. I know he was welcomed into Heaven with much rejoicing. My prayers are with Mrs. Holman and the family that misses him.
