Mrs. Martha Ann Washington Martin Black was born on February 22 th , 1941 to the late Mr. and Mrs.
Booker and Mary Martin. As one of God’s servants, she peacefully transitioned to her heavenly
home and eternal resting place on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, after a brief illness, surrounded by her
loving family and friends. She was 85 years old.
Mrs. Black was a 1959 graduate of Foster’s Grove High School.
Martha was a faithful and devoted member of Foster’s Grove Baptist Church, Cherokee Springs,
South Carolina. She served on the Pastor’s Aide, Missionary Board and Sympathy Club Ministries
and supported the Culinary Ministry. She was also a member of the Friday Senior Citizen Ministry.
She retired from White Oaks Manor, Nursing Home as a Patient Care Associate. Prior to this she
worked for 15 years at Arrow Automotive Industries and for 7 years at Raycord Company.
Martha met and married Joseph K. Black in 1965. They were married for 51 years until his death in
2016. With this union they had two children: Brigadier General Wayne L. Black (Symea) of
Indianapolis IN, and Harnetha (Renee) Dean (Deceased) of Spartanburg, SC. They also had two
stepchildren: Ernest (Tony) Parker Jr. (Sharon) of Sumter, SC and Teresa D. Patterson of Columbia,
SC.
Martha always showed a passion for love and caring for her children, grandchildren: Ariel N.
Johnson; Wayne L. Black, Jr.; Kiara N. Black; Nicholas F. Dean; and great-grandchildren: Zareyah N.
McDonald; Leivy Z. Boyd; Xoey C. McDonald; Jaxisyn N. Boyd; Noa J. Boyd. She also leaves behind a
host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Martha was preceded in death by her brothers Booker T. Martin Jr., John Thomas Martin, Ralph
Martin, Paul Martin, Mack Martin, Carl Lee Martin and sister Mary Kathleen Mills.
Martha’s rich legacy of nurturing and caring will forever dwell in the heart of her loyal and loving
sister Pauline Black who survives her of Spartanburg, SC.
Services for Martha Black will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2026, at Foster’s Grove Baptist Church at 1
PM. Interment will be at Heritage Memorial Gardens in Roebuck, SC following the service. No public viewing.
