SPARTANBURG, SC-- Ms. Mildred Anna Maude Porter transitioned peacefully on Friday, October 19, 2012, at her home. She was the daughter of the late William Posey Porter, Sr. and Rosa Dickert Porter. She was predeceased by four sisters, Modestine Louise Porter, Carrie Porter Johnson, Helen Rose Marie Porter, and Grace Lillian Porter Smith; and one brother, William Posey Porter, Jr.Mildred was a 1944 graduate of S.C. State College in Orangeburg. She was a retired Spartanburg District Seven educator having taught at the former Cummings Street Elementary School; she later retired as a Guidance Counselor from Houston Elementary.She was a Charter member of Spartanburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the National Education Association.Mildred served as Chaplain, secretary and president of Delta Sigma Theta in the sixties. She was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for education and community service. She was a forward-thinking and visionary leader who was committed to laying the groundwork for future generations through her work as an educator and community pioneer.Mildred had a fun side also; she had certificates for completing over 60 hours in Ballroom Dancing from Spartanburg Technical College ranging from 1978-1980. Crocheting was among her credits, but evidence showed Ballroom dancing took center stage.Survivors include one brother, Robert Dickert Porter of the home; a niece, Karen L. Johnson; a nephew, Harvey Edward Johnson, Jr. of Maryland; other cousins, relatives, and friends; and a special caregiver, Mary West, Charles and Lillie Atchison, supportive life-long friends.Funeral service will be held Friday morning, October 26, 2012, at 11:00AM at the Greater Trinity AME Church. Pastor Jesse Anderson, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens.J. W. WoodwardFuneral Home
