Obituary For Mr. Victor Philson, Sr.

Victor Philson, Sr. peacefully entered eternal rest on March 3, 2018. Mr. Philson lived a blessed life of 97 years, just a few days prior to his 98th birthday. Victor was born March 17, 1920 the late Jamie and Wyatt Philson. Mr. Philson was the widower of Odessa Rookard Philson. Victor was a dedicated member of Forest Chapel C. M. E. Church where he served as a Trustee, Steward and Treasurer. He was a man of integrity and the oldest man in the congregation thus making him the Father of the church. Mr. Philson joined the U.S. Army in 1944 and was initially stationed in Camp Croft, SC. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway. Mr. Philson became a bailiff with the Spartanburg County Courthouse following his retirement. Mr. Philson was an avid checker player. Survivors include: his daughter, Jacquelyn (David) Smith of Roebuck, SC; his son, Gerald Winfred Philson of Ashville, NC; his sister-in-law, Lucille Rookard; his six grandchildren, Felicia Watson, Gerald Philson, Sean Philson, Zaniya Pearson, Patrice D. Smith and Kamiya Smith; his eight great-grandchildren; his ten nieces and nephews, Donna M. Mayes, Karen R. Foster, Stanley Rookard, Cheryl Woodruff, Myrna Foster, Dary; Rookard, Kimberly Gray, Renee Gray, Eric Rookard and Linda B. Poole; and a host of beloved family, church members and friends. He was preceded in death by: his loving wife of seventy years, Odessa R. Philson; a son, Victor Philson, Jr.; six siblings, Mack, Elizabeth, Samuel, Minnie, Isaiah and Paul Philson; and a grandson, Ryan Keith Philson. A Celebration of the Life of Victor Philson, Sr. will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Chapel C. M. E. Church, 210 Old Blackstock Rd., Spartanburg, SC. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens, 2310 Cannons campground Rd., Drayton, SC. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
