Obituary For Otis Hill

Otis Griffin Hill Spartanburg, SC Otis Griffin Hill, 94, peacefully entered into eternal rest on July 20, 2016. Mrs. Hill was the daughter of the late Thomas and Julia Griffin. She was the widow of Willie Joe Hill, Sr. Mrs. Hill was a member of Mt. Zion World Outreach and was employed by the Bonhaven-Cleveland Estate. She was educated in the Laurens County School System until 7th grade when her education was interrupted to start working full-time to help care for her family which included her 11 younger siblings. She was a lifelong believer in academic achievement and encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue higher education. After retiring at age 78, Mrs. Hill accomplished her goal of becoming a student again and obtained her GED at age 80 at Southside Learning Center. With three children that were graduates of Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, she was an active supporter of the school. Her legacy of giving will continue with the establishment of the Otis Griffin Hill Memorial Scholarship Fund at Benedict College. Mrs. Hill was very active in her community and church. She was a board member of the L. D. Barksdale Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation Board, the Piedmont Area Girl Scout Council, Piedmont Community Action Board, Mt. Zion Baptist Church Sunday School Superintendent and Mt. Zion Baptist Church Usher Board President. Left to cherish fond and loving memories are: her daughter, Emily Monroe (Ronald); her sons, Dr. Willie Joe Hill, Jr. (Jannie), Ronnie F. Hill (Elizabeth), Allan A. Hill (Agnes), Michael V. Hill; her brother, Curtis Griffin; her sisters, Lillian Griffin Stephens, Mary Griffin Todd and Annette Griffin Ruffin; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild. Mrs. Hill was preceded in death a son, Archie Lee Hill, two sisters and five brothers. A Celebration of the Life of Mrs. Otis Griffin Hill will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion World Outreach, 320 Wimberly Drive, Spartanburg, SC. Interment will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens, 2310 Cannons Campground Rd., Drayton, SC.
