Robert Lee Means was born January 27, 1950, in Spartanburg, SC to the late Troy Lee and Nettie Maragne Means. He was reared in Spartanburg County schools and graduated from Carver High School class of 1968, and was employed with Phelps Dodge for 30 years, until his retirement in 2018.
Robert was a faithful member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church for over 40 years, where he proudly served on the Deacon board and Adult Church School Ministry until his health began to decline.
Robert was many things to many people. An honorable son, caring brother, and loyal friend. He was a true alpha male. But nothing would ever supersede the role in which he held in highest esteem, the role of fatherhood! Above anything else, he was a loving and supportive father and Papa. To know Robert is to know what he held nearest and dearest to his heart- his daughter, Shamica L. Means of Columbia, SC, his son Robert “Isaiah” Means (Lasandra), and bonus son Gary “Chuckie” (Donna) Manigan both of Spartanburg, his granddaughters, Kailen, Amani, & Raleigh and grandsons, Jalen & Brycen.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, left to cherish fond memories are his beloved sisters, Linder “Dianne” Means, and Gloria Means (Boyce) Fernanders of Chesnee, SC, brothers Michael (Hilda) Means of Lilburn, GA and Glenn Douglas Means of Norwich, CT., close cousin Gwendolyn Gilliam, bonus daughter-in-love, Ariel Norris and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Service will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC. Burial will be in the Heritage Memorial Gardens, 3901 S. Church St., Spartanburg, SC.

My Sincerest Condolences To The family of Mr. Robert L. Means. I am a neighbor of Robert, and I seen the wreath on his door. He was a very nice person and good neighbor. We always would speak to each other, and have a conversation. I didn't have the privilege to fully get to know him, but the occasional meetings and conversations, was still an Impact! My condolences to the family of Robert Means. He was someone you could talk with and knew that he really cared. He was my ward Deacon and called and visited often especially when he noticed that I was declining in health. Over the past year we talked twice a day. He allowed me to provide meals for him with the assistance of the church school ministry when he was declining in health. When he couldn't get to church school he called in. We talked about any and everything. He told me that he was tired. I understand his struggle because he had was with me through mine. I felt a bond with him and cared for him. I will certainly miss my bold, candid and honest friend. Thank you family for allowing me to be a part of his life. My prayers are with you. May God bless you and comfort you during this time.
