Shirley Beverly Scruggs Caldwell, 88, went peacefully with the Lord on May 12, 2021. She was born December 14, 1932, the only child of the late James Scruggs and the late Alberta Shavers Scruggs. Shirley was raised on the southside of Spartanburg, a resident of the infamous East Valley Street. She attended Dean Street School and graduated from Carver High School, Class of 1951. She attended Howard University and continued her education at a university in Paris during her stay in Europe.
Shirley moved to New York, where she met and married Jack H. Caldwell, Sr. They would travel the world together and build a family. Being an Army wife, she lived in Japan and Europe, back to Virginia and then to Alaska in 1971. During the 21 years she lived in Fairbanks, Alaska she was an active member of Corinthian Baptist Church, member and past officer of the Order of the Eastern Star, The Golden Circle, President of the NCO Wives Club, Co-host of Perspective TV show, an active Teamster, a member of NAACP, and owner of Shirl’s Enterprise. She was a long-distance operator at Alascom Communications until she retired. Following the death of her husband in 1987, Shirley returned to her hometown Spartanburg in 1992. Once back home she resumed her membership at her childhood/family church Mount Moriah Baptist Church. She was a loving, caring, creative, supportive wife, mother, and daughter. Shirley was also the eldest living member on both maternal and paternal side at the time of her passing.
Shirley leaves to cherish fond and loving memories are: her children, Wanda E. Wilson (David) Anchorage, Alaska, Jack H. Caldwell, Jr. (Amber) Spartanburg, SC, Michel S.E. Caldwell Knoxville, TN, Tracey S. Caldwell of the home, Kenneth C. Caldwell (Staci) Bothell, Washington and Tarajina C. Mayfield (Maceo) of the home; stepdaughter, Jaqueline Roundtree Alexandria, VA; grandsons, Sean David Wilson (Ellie) Anchorage, Alaska, Michael C. Caldwell Tallahassee, FL and Quest Tarrik Caldwell Spartanburg, SC; granddaughter, Mary Roundtree- Jones Alexandria, VA.
She will be remembered dearly by a host of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack H. Caldwell, Sr. and her parents.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 20, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, SC.
A Celebration of the Life of Shirley Beverly Scruggs Caldwell will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at The J. W. Woodward Funeral Home (parking lot), 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, SC. Burial will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens, 2256 Cannons Campground Rd., Drayton, SC.
