Mrs. Virginia “Jenny” Granger Black, 93 readily accepted the Master’s call on the evening of August 31, 2020 at Woodland Place Assisted Living Facility (formerly Windsor House). A native of Spartanburg County, she was born December 22, 1926, to the late Mr. James Mansfield Granger and Mrs. Esther Greer Granger. Virginia was the widow of the late Reverend David Black, Sr.
At an early age, Mrs. Black joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Walnut Grove, SC; she remained a faithful member and served in various ministries until her health declined. Around 2008, she was bestowed the honor of Mother of the church.
Mrs. Black was employed as a domestic cleaner for many prominent families in the Spartanburg County community.
She truly loved gardening, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Perhaps her greatest talents were being a natural comic and having a gift for making others laugh. She was a magnet for drawing family, friends and strangers together.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by: two children, Richard Black and Evelyn Black; five siblings, Helen Granger Fuller, Estelle Granger Nash, James “Big Jim” Granger, Ruthie Mae Granger Young, Bobby Gene Granger; and two adopted siblings, Louise Meadows and Bo Brannon.
Mrs. Black leaves to cherish fond and loving memories to: her son, Mr. David Lee Black (Mary) of Pauline, SC and her daughter, Mrs. Jenelle Black Dean (Rickey) of Spartanburg, SC and one granddaughter reared in the home, Mrs. Ebony Black Evans (Keith) of Spartanburg, SC; her grandchildren Reverend David Locklear (Sheali) of Cincinnati, OH, Ms. Shaneka Black, Reverend Anthony Rashad Dean (Ana) and Ms. Leah Dean all of Spartanburg, SC; five great-grandchildren, Lauryn Evans, Ayden Tate, Amiyah Dean, Raegan Dean and Lucas Dean all of Spartanburg, SC; her sister, Mrs. Allie Lee Hardy (Clifford) of Buffalo, SC; her special friend and caregiver, Ms. Priscilla Koman of Spartanburg, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A Celebration of the Life of Mrs. Virginia "Jenny" Granger Black will be held graveside on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Pauline, SC.
