Obituary For William Byrd

William Alan Byrd found his rest in the arms of God on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina to the late Sallie Mae Means Byrd and Roosevelt David Byrd on November 16, 1952. At an early age, William was baptized at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church by the late Reverend Dr. J. Leon Pridgeon. He graduated from Carver High School, Class of 1970, where he was an outstanding athlete. He received a football scholarship to Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Mr. Byrd’s professional career began with Milliken and Company as a supervisor in manufacturing. He continued in supervisory management in Danville, Virginia. He left the East Coast to pursue a management position at the Department of Corrections in San Diego, California. Upon returning to Spartanburg, he held various positions until he became disabled. Left to cherish fond and loving memories are: a very devoted mom for life, Mrs. Dorothy S. Byrd of the home; his brothers, Roosevelt (Mildred) Booker of Statesville, NC, Howard (Pearl) Butler of Spartanburg, SC, Eddie (Patricia) Byrd of Columbia, MA, Freddie Byrd of Greenville, SC and Gerald Jackson of Charlotte, NC; his sisters, Deotha (Raymond) Byrd Bobo of Clinton, MA, Joyce Butler Long of Spartanburg, SC and Rose Byrd Barksdale of Conyers, GA; his lifelong bestfriend, James R. Moseley; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who loved him dearly. William was preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby L. Byrd and Stanley D. Byrd, Sr. A Celebration of the Life of William Alan Byrd will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Dr. Benjamin D. Snoody will officiate. Interment will be in the Heritage Memorial Gardens, 3901 S. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC.
