Rufus Leron Brown, 73 the son of the late Marine Brown and Freddie Fee, entered this world on October 10, 1951, in Lexington, Kentucky, and departed this life on August 24, 2025, after a long battle with Liver cancer.
With grace, humor, and quiet strength, Rufus touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Throughout his life, Rufus was known for being one of the best dancers on the floor, a drummer, and a jokester.
Rufus known as “Boo” grew up thinking he was a real comedian, always telling jokes and all sorts of stories that he could produce to make you laugh. The stories and laughter shared over the years will forever echo in the hearts of those left behind.
As we gather to honor Boo’s memory, we remember a life marked by bar-b-cues, joke-telling, laughter, and family. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we celebrate the legacy Boo leaves behind—a legacy of, it ain’t what it looks like, you do not have to stay in what you are in, and there is a better way.
Boo was proof that even when you have a terrible start in life, you can change and beat the odds. When others say you can’t and won’t make it, you can turn your life around. We, his siblings, were ever so proud of Boo’s accomplishments (from never really holding a real job to getting a good job, retiring, and not going back to the life that he grew up in). Boo, you beat the odds!
Boo will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. May we find peace in our memories and strength. Your spirit lives on in all of us.
He is survived by his beloved son, Rufus Washington (Teresa Washington), and grandchildren Sapphire Washington, NylaWashington, and Gabriel Washington.
He also leaves behind five sisters—Yolander Jackson, Deborah Brown, Joyce Carpenter, Freda Blair (Michael Blair), and Pearletta Gordon—and one brother, Gregory Brown.
In addition, he is remembered by his devoted companion of over 40 years, Julia Mason, and her children: two stepsons, Gregory Hogan and Harvey Hogan; three stepdaughters, Ora Mae Franklin, Ermma Hogan, and Julia Hughes (Anthony Hughes); as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.
