Obituary For Dicey Freeman Walton

It was a typical hot, humid, and mostly dry summer day on August 14 in 1939, a Monday, when baby Dicey Mae Freeman, was born to Thomas Freeman and Cherry Lee Rouse in Waynesboro, Georgia.

According to the national weather bureau, it was also humid and dry. For many, a perfect day, though around this time, history records that on her born day there were escalating tensions on the eve of World War II. Dicey’s birth coincided with other national news, like the Fort Knox tragedy, Donald Duck Day, and the opening of Comiskey Park’s first night game in Chicago.

Ironically, or maybe not, her life came full circle during the sweltering summer as she transitioned on a Monday, June 8, 2026, just days before official summer. It, too, was a sweltering day with similar temperatures, like on the day she was born. Also, like on the day of her birth, when she left this earth, she left two active wars - the US-Israel-Iran and The Russian Federation-Ukraine wars. Ironic yet prophetic.

Dicey grew up in the bootstrapping south where she received her formative education. At a young age, she joined Daniel Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She became a young bride, marrying Tommie Walton. This union was blessed with two sons, Tommie Angelo Walton, Jr. (Queens, NY) and Tesfaye D. Walton, Sr. (Lawrenceville, GA). The family moved to Harlem, New York in 1958, later moving to Queens, NY. It was in New York where Dicey flourished. She flirted with college, taking multiple professional courses. She was a successful businesswoman and multi-dwelling property owner. She also had employment with Hubert Bindery, (New York City, NY); Harlem Urban Development; 32BJ Union, and New York Board of Education where she retired. She belonged to multiple social, civic, and other organizations, namely Eastern Star.

Dicey had a benevolent spirit – loving and helping others. She also took every opportunity to motivate others to advance themselves towards fulfilling lives -others as well as their own. She was instrumental in helping others “get on their feet” by encouraging them to glean every possible opportunity, not allowing excuses to get in the way. She led by example. “Boobie” was instrumental in raising her grandchildren and nephews. She loved cooking and according to her son, Tes, “she made the best grits!” She was always reaching to help somebody, whether it be family, friend, or stranger. She was a hard- worker until her son, Tes, retired her, bringing her back south to be closer to family.

Dicey suffered a long-term debilitating illness and was cared for by her youngest son, Tes, with professionals via assisted living facilities. She passed away peacefully at Northside Hospital in Lawrenceville, GA in the afternoon. She was a Christian and anticipated her reunion with the Lord prior to her passing.

Ms. Dicey Mae “Boobie” Walton will be remembered as a sweet, caring and benevolent woman with strong values, a fashionable role model, and excellent cook who also loved to travel – she especially loved bus rides, particularly bus rides to view the country and Canada. Her favorite pastimes included antiquing and thrifting. Jazz and blues were her favorite genres of music. Dicey was a successful businesswoman, strong community advocate, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and overall fine humanitarian who shared extraordinary love with ordinary people.

Ms. Dicey Mae “Boobie” Walton was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Freeman and Cherry Lee Rouse, siblings Thomas Freeman, Jr., William Freeman, Stephen Freeman, Jr., Lucretia Freeman, Kenneth A. Rouse, Willie E. Rouse, James Rouse, Rosalene Ashley, and Beatrice Gaines.

She leaves to cherish her memory sons Tommie Angelo Walton, Jr. and Tesfaye D. Walton, Sr.; Robbie Freeman, Bernice Rouse, Angelina V. Skinner; grandchildren Kendale (Khaleefah) Walton, Shakia J. Walton, Imani L. Walton, Tesfaye (TJ) Walton, Jr, Isaiah M. Walton, Kenneth A. Walton, Shadee Walton, Faizah N. Walton, Twila P. Walton; daughter-in-law Debra A. Walton, one brother-in-law Al Skinner; 13 great grandchildren, 5 great great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends, from 2 pm to 5 pm, Friday, June19, 2026, at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Kinsey & Walton Chapel. Interment will follow in Daniel Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 1986 Hancock Landing Road, Waynesboro, Ga.
