Frederick Houston, age: 87 of Martinez, GA, passed away July 5, 2026.He was a devoted family man who cherished his family and friends, found great purpose in his career as an educator, and enjoyed staying physically active. Frederick Houston Jr. was born on May 8, 1939, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Frederick Houston Sr. and Idella Hines Houston. He spent his childhood in Boston, where he enjoyed taking trips to Florida with his father, reading comic books, digging for clams and spending time with friends. Frederick began his educational journey in the Boston Public Schools before attending the University of Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later earned a Master of Education in Special Education from Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, followed by a second master's degree in Teacher Leadership from Boston College.
Frederick found great joy and purpose in his 43-year career as an educator with a focus on those in underprivileged areas. He served as a middle school special education teacher, taught English as a Second Language to adults preparing to become United States citizens, and later worked as an administrator supporting adults through the citizenship process. Frederick was united in marriage to the love of his life, Zennie Houston, on February 10,1962. Together they built a loving family and shared more than 64 years of marriage. They were blessed with three children: Tolisa Abrams, who preceded him in death, Lashalle Houston, and Frederick Houston Jr.; three grandchildren, Kahmal Houston, Jada Davis, and Christian Houston; and one great-grandchild, Jasiah Davis.
Frederick's greatest joy was spending time with his family. Whether gathered around the table playing dominoes or traveling to visit family in Georgia, New York City, and Florida, he cherished every opportunity to be with those he loved.
He enjoyed films grounded in realism and had a wonderful sense of humor. He also had a lifelong love for automobiles, taking particular pride in the vehicles he owned over the years.
Frederick found great fulfillment in redemption and education and firmly believed that with focus, dedication, and grit, anyone could accomplish their goals. He lived by those principles throughout his life, leaving a legacy of perseverance, compassion, and a deep commitment to helping others succeed. Send flowers to the service of Frederick Houston
Although I didn't have the privilege of knowing Cousin Fred for very long, the time I did have with him left a lasting impression. I will always remember his quick wit, his wonderful sense of humor, and the way his smile could light up his entire face. He had a way of making those around him smile right along with him.
Watching the way his family surrounded him with such love, dignity, and devotion during his final days spoke volumes about the man he was. It was clear that he was deeply loved, greatly respected, and treasured by those closest to him. What a beautiful gift it is to be so well cared for and so deeply cherished.
My prayer is that in the days, weeks, and months ahead, God will bring your family peace and comfort. I pray that you'll continue to find Fred in the little moments that matter most. Maybe someone will tell a joke that sounds just like Pops. Maybe you'll catch "Dad's look" on someone's face. Maybe you'll see his smile shining back at you through one of his grandsons. I hope those moments bring tears when they need to, but also laughter, warmth, and gratitude for the life he lived and the love he leaves behind.
Though his absence will be deeply felt, the love, wisdom, laughter, and memories he shared will continue to live on in each of you.
Keeping your family in my prayers. May God's peace surround you and His love carry you through the days ahead. Love alwaysđź’ś
