Mr. Joe Roosevelt Smith, peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Thursday, May 16, 2024, in Augusta, GA. Joe was born on May 22, 1933, and was one of five siblings born to Joe and Minnie Smith, in Hinds County, Mississippi. He was predeceased by his parents and three sisters, Eva Smith Files, Helen Smith Jackson, and Vera Smith Ward, and a daughter, Joyce Ann Smith.
While attending Campbell High School in Rockwood, Tennessee, he lettered in football and basketball. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and retired after thirty years of service. After his military retirement, he earned his Bachelor of Science from Brenau College, Gainesville, GA., in May 1999.
In 1986, he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 from the United States Army, Fort Eisenhower (formerly Fort Gordon), GA., after serving 30 years. After his military retirement, he worked at Sears Contract Sales in Augusta, GA., from September 1990 to April 2011 where he retired with 20 years of service.
He was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served in multiple capacities during his tenure which included the Welcome Ministry, Child Development Center Board, and the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Pastor Search Committee. He was also a member of the Leonard Betts Sunday School class, and the Tuesday and Thursday night Bible Study classes.
Joeβs cherished memories will live on through his beloved wife Ida Robbins Smith; daughters, Cardinal Smith of Erie, PA., Cheryl Smith of Manhattan, NY, and Stacey Smith of Grovetown, GA.; step-son, Joseph (Tawanda) Robbins of Charlotte, NC.; grandson, Joseph Abrian Smith; granddaughter, Terese Johnson, and two step-granddaughters, Leah and Tia Robbins; and brothers-in-law, Cephus (Sallie) Lea, Emmanuel (Eloise) Lea, Larry (Beatrice) Lea, and a host of nieces, nephews, and devoted friends.
A Celebration of Life will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1223 Laney Walker Blvd. Interment, 11am, Tuesday, May 28th, Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC. Kinsey & Walton Funeral Home, 3618 Peach Orchard Road. (706) 790-8858
